OK I want to re-fill the coolant and add some more water in the radiator. Usually I just put it in but I was reading the corolla manual and it says I should drain the coolant holding thingy and the water from the radiator. It's got diagrams of a drain plug which is well below the radiator cap and inacessable if you're standing next to the car. I'm just wondering if these means you're meant to hoist the engine out of the car just to drain the coolant and radiator water. It sounds a bit silly to me which is why I was wondering if anyone could let me know where it is and also, on the coolant cap there's this hose that's like 3cm that's just open and leads to nowhere -- what does it do?
If you guys need pics I can post em up.
It's a '90 Corolla CSX 4A-FC Engine.

Cheers!

I'm gunna take a guess and say that tube that leads to no where is your overflow tube.
Most cars have a small tank like the windscreen squirter has to catch this over flow.

you might have the get underneath the car and undo the drain plug from there.

This is just personal prefrence but i like to use a coolant that doesn't need water this way there is less chance of rust.
but you coolant might neutralise the rust causing stuff in the water.

I hope it might help

some cars might not? have a drain plug / hard to get to etc...
its best to use the plug if you can but on
most cars you can take off the lower radiator hose - slowly until it starts coming out and hold it there... so coolant doesnt splash over everything, do it on some grass.

coolant mainly varies by gylcol content, just get a decent percent of it when u buy premix - mid priced name brand stuff,
33% is normal.

you can buy concentrate and make your own mix, buy distilled water to mix it with and not tap water which has chemicals and impurities in it.

you can also get a radiator flush mix to get all the crap
out or buy cheap coolant and flush it through.

empty out the overflow bottle too. i second hose to no where
off the bottle is the overflow hose

take off the radiator cap and the coolant will drain more
easily.

obviously only do this exersize when the car is cold and dont
run the car without coolant Razz Razz Razz

im not sure what "inaccessable when standing next to car" means, but you will have to get under the car to get at the radiator drain plug. (obviously it wont be at the top of the radiator). just undo the cap and the plug and drain away. probably a good idea to run some radiator cleaner in it before hand. then buy some nice TOYOTA RED COOLANT and mix it with distilled/demineralised water. easy Very Happy

Ahh ok, I don't have any experience. This means I'm going to have to hoist my car up somehow to get it done and I don't think I really have anything to do that with.

And yep, I'm using a coolant that doesn't require water.

Thanks for all the help guys, you've been great! Very Happy

unless your car is lowered or has a huge front bar, you should be able to lie down and reach under to undo the plug.

well you should never get under a car that is only supported by a jack in the first place.
if you have to raise it, put it on jack/axle stands
