ive noticed a couple of nice nissan Q45s (with the vh45 engine) on some importer sites, for quite cheap. i was wondering what people know about them. mainly concerning reliability, how dear parts are, and if they are many workshops around that would know what to do with one.
thanks

VH45.. all good.
quad cam V8.
stock they have washers welded into the exhaust manifold to restrict the flow and de-rate the engine.
good for 600+ hp N/A
ive been thinking about one..
or a 2JZ as the next project..

I could have bought one on the day that I picked up the 1FZ-FE (thats the 4.5L twincam petrol from the landcruisers) for less money!! The !FZ-FE was $2800, whereas the 4.5L nissan beauty was $2200. Some of the great features were-
4 or 6 bolt mains
(can't remember-but one is great and the other even better)
100mm throttle body and massive diameter runners.
welded stainless headers from the factory
(super skinny though-another countermeasure from nissan, like the washers in the manifold ports, to restrict the power down to the 206ish kW unofficial Japanese limit)
Alloy block (I think from memory-could be wrong though)
Generally a damn stinky looking motor. The guys at the importers (Port Road Commercial here in Adelaide) have involvement in the desert racing scene (ie Finke desert race, buggies, etc) and were saying that guys were using them for racing with great success-without any internal mods either.
I still went with the 1FZ with it's primitive iron block and less advanced general design as the 4.5 L datsun motor was as wide as a house with the 90degree vee and 16valves on each head. It simply wouldn't have fit between the front suspension points in the crown and would have required much more work to plumb in the blower. Having said that though, by all reports the 4.5 Datto engine is the equal of the 1UZ-if even a little better due simply to the extra 500cc's.
As for parts-you will be able to get parts in oz as the Q45 was actually sold here in low volumes, and it seems that in general Nissan Australia are far more reasonable on parts than Toyota. They happily carry bits for imports and low volume stuff-unlike beloved Toyota Aust. who would prefer to rot in hell rather than encourage grey imports.....
Have a look on the brisbane importers in one of the recent Zoom mags. They had a Q45 for less than 10K I think. Anyway-a damn good car if you ask me, but be prepared for a humungous fuel bill-As efficient as the 4.5 is, you can't get away from the 1800kg kerb weight........
Take it easy
