Gearstick switch adjustment ... '85 MX73 Cressida Sun, 12 December 2004 00:46 Go to next message
As you would know, the gear stick must be in park or neutral before the engine will ignite. My problem is that the switch that senses the position of the gearstick appears out of adjustment because I often have to "pull and shove" the stick before ignition happens.

Is there a switch? How do I access it, from beneath the car or down through the internal panels etc? Are there any tricks to fixing this? Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks...

Put the car on stands and get under the right side near the gearbox, straight under the drivers seat. It's easiet to have the car jacked up and sitting on the two left wheels and support the weight front and rear on the right side. MX73's are damn low riding cars so are a pain to work on from underneath.

There is a lever the comes down from the shifter and connects to a horizontal rod (about 50cm long)that runs towards the front of the gearbox. This bar in turn connects to the switch in question(via another short lever). The neutral start switch is mounted to the front right side of the gearbox.

You'll see that, where the bar connects to the gearstick/shifter, the connection is adjustable becuase of a slotted hole. Check and adjust here aswell were the small lever actually connects to the gearbox. There is a nut there too that might be loose.

Good luck.

Great, thanks for the reply. Does this mean the lever, bar, switch are all visible without there being a need to remove access covers or anything like that?

Yes, it's all done from underneath. No need to rip out any centre console bits inside.

Well I finally got under the car to check this out but I got worried. By adjusting the position of the lever on the bar using the slotted hole, the position of the switch actuator would move (which is what I want) but I worried the transmission would be affected as well. I worry that this might cause slippage or other transmission problems.

I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and get out the spanner, see what happens!

There is a little 1/4pie shaped thing under there.
Adjust it with that instead.

Undo the little bolt, move it a few degrees.
