Smoke out my air filter

Hi.. I'm new here and i have a few basic questions and I would love as much feed back about them as possible ..don't be afraid to ramble on, for you can be assured i will.
I have a 1990 toyota celica sx coupe ( auto )
Nothing flash but it gets me from "A- to -B".
Ive noticed recently my car has been hesitating intermittently, Tho lately it seems more common during gear changes, its like it revs up then dies for a split second then roars off again... sometimes it coughs for a split second.
I have no idea what is causing this.
Secondly My coil lead is faulty according to my father in-law, he told me to purchase a new one and fit it.
I went to change it with a new one i had purchased, I know nothing about cars and it was getting dark and I couldn't undo the fitting on the end of the lead that attaches to the distributor and goes to the coil.
I tried for a few minutes and not being technically minded at all I couldn't get it off... so i put the brand new lead in the glove box unfitted and left it there..figuring id get a mechanic to do it the next day......... heres the weird part, the car had been running fine all day ..( bar the intermittent hesitation )... but once i put the new coil lead away, and left the old lead on the vehicle..with the bonnet up.. i tried to start the car... it cranked and cranked and cranked and then its made a really weird noise, and i saw a big puff of smoke come out my k&n air filter... baffled and not wanting to cause any damage, I left the vehicle alone and am now very worried something may be wrong with the vehicle... I'm too scared to start it and i cant get the car down to the mechanics which is miles away from where i live.
what would cause the hesitation i speak of?
And why would the air filter make that puff of smoke?
Is it likely the coil lead is the cause of this?
anyways i really hope someone can help me.
I am very worried, because i cant afford any major bills at the moment.
My vehicle is very standard bar a K&N air filter.
I get it serviced regularly but haven't done a service in over six months due to money hassles ..something I'm sure you all can relate too at one stage or another.
Hope someone can give me an idea of what is causing the trouble so I have some idea if the local shonky rip off mechanics are on the right track when i finally get it to them.
Thanks.

Sure you didn't upset the dizzy cap by pulling on it, or get a lead crossed or something? Sounds like you got something crossed, and it backfired. Check the cap and all the leads, try and fire it up again, should go

The hesitation could be dirty or faulty injectors. When you get it running again, try running some injector cleaner through it and see if that helps.

If the ignition leads are still the originals you will need a new distributor cap as well as leads. The factory leads are connected to the cap and so you must replace the lot of them
Once you have replaced the cap though the next time you can simply replace the leads as the new cap will have removable leads.
