dammit this pisses me off!

Get up this morning and some spineless pr!ck has busted into my ke55, and stolen the one thing that's worth anything on the car...
My brother bought me a pretty cool old sports steering wheel that worked real well, looked ok (wasn't flashy or nothing, black rubber & leather) and it cost him like a weeks wages as a apprentice...
It's not so much that it's gone, it's just a steering wheel, but it was my F**KING BIRTHDAY PRESENT.
Spineless inbred fleabag who did it, I hope it breaks off in their hands and they end up around a tree...
*grrrrrr*
</rant>
anyway, has anyone got any ideas to stop someone ripping off stuff like the steering wheel?
takes 30 seconds or so to take off a wheel if you're good and have the tools, which these guys obviously did - at least nothing else was broken - but 30 seconds is a LONG time when you have quad 110 dB screamers in the cabin... watch em BLEED...
seriously though, I'm now trying to think of ways to protect the cars I have, with reasonably (!) cheap methods of deterrence...
ideas anyone?
cheers
-nick

I've been thinking of the same thing since my car got broken into. Besides getting off my ass, and fitting an alarm which i should have done ages ago, the only other thing i've been able to do is sleep in trackies, with my shoes at the door and my old amp ground cable next to them (thick as, with nice metal connectors on the end! It hurts!) Other than i dont really know. I live in a flat which only has on street parking. I was thinking about borrowing my friends ninja swords and scaring any prick that comes near it again! But Id be interested in other peoples ideas about this, because sometimes now i cant even sleep properly, or even dream that my car is being stolen

some nice big thumb tacks under the seat cover, just make sure you take them out before you get in.
or get a pet snake and leave in the car

To hell with the steering wheel shock thingy.. I want that Taser Gun!!
But yeah, that thing on the steering wheel looks like a pretty good idea. Knowing the frigged up ways that out court systems work though, a potential theif would probably be able to sue you for using it on them..
My condolences for losing the steering wheel Nick - I know what it's like to lose something with sentimental value from a car, especially when the theif would never value it as highly as you do..

I was thinking of electrifying the gear knob using an old ignition coil, maybe having it switched on/off by my alarm. Would need to separate top and bottom of the gear knob with say top connected to the coil and the bottom earthed. Hmmmm.....how much of a fright would that give a car thief?

i have worked in car alarm installations... and come up with all these ideas and several more.
unfortuntely anything involving live electrics, electrical shocks, or injury inducing deterrents are ILLEGAL. if you are found to have them you get in BIG SH!T.... which sux cos i had some RIPPER ideas...
eg: metal door handles with around 1000V attached to them (had the inverter to do it too!!)
similarly high voltage dummy ignition barrel (was creating a
remote igntion system that bypassed the original - also not raod worthy!)
electrified seats
and many other that i had to discard because of legalities
ANY yes you are also right... if a theif were to be injured by such a deterrent... then they can sue you... BIG TIME!

I can understand what you are saying, but parliment are in the middle of changing that law since the incident at the Peakhurst Pub. Where if you are hurt during any criminal act you will not be able to sue.

Lucky for me I am in NZ so not much chance of getting sued. Also not much chance of doing anyone a serious injury with an ordinary car coil. Electrifying door handles is a big no-no as anyone walking past the car could brush up against them. Remember something a couple of years back about a traffic warden (or something similar) who was electrocuted by a similar setup and the owner of the car went to jail for a serious amount of time, think it was in England.
I don't think there are any particular legal problems with screamers, assuming they are ONLY inside the car and won't affect anyone walking past.

screamers are perfectly legal INSIDE the car... they are outside too, but EPA can do you over if they run continuously for more than a few minutes.
car ignition coil will still hurt someone (20000V... it hurts - trust me on this one!!), and they can still sue for such a thing: since such an installation is a deliberate attempt to harm the person, despite their criminal intent. As far as the law changes go... dont know about that yet.
basically anything other than noise, flashing, paging ringing mobile phones, locking doors etc is illegal.... which of course sux

theres some pretty good self-delt punishment ideas here and im sure we have plenty others but can i just remind every one that if you wanna hurt them you better make sure that stay hurt cause the first thing they are gonna do after they recover from the pain youve caused them is fuck your car up bigtime. you dont want an angry car thief near your car

best way is to get your car off the street if possible - sadly in most metro areas this aint possible - thats why it sucks to live in the city ..
i got a big arse shed at my place - lock and key and car kept safely inside snug as a bug at night

what about some kinda switch to disconnect your brake booster or something......
If they break in and drive off in your car in a hurry they'll soon find themselves plowed into a wall or other hard object.
You could only do this if you had comprehensive insurance though.... otherwise you'd have to sue to get your car fixed.

I was surprised to read in open road, or a similar ragazine, that close to 50% of all cars stolen are actually taken from people's homes/garages. Locked up and all. So, basically, you are fucked no matter where you are ...

Prob because the ones that are worth stealing are looked after and properly locked up ......the other 50% are prob just junkies looking for some quick $$$ or joyriders
thatd be my guess

hmmm,
try a removable gearstick to stop the whole car getting nicked, and 3m scotchshield (or a copy) to stop the windows being smashed. it comes tinted, or in mirror form. sheetmetal works well if placed in the right places inside the door, to prevent the dreaded coathanger treatment.
i just bought a siemens pager alarm for the car, it has all the sensors and stuff, as well as an 800m range pager which in case of break-in can silence the alarm, and it vibrates and beeps like a mobile phone. still have to install it though...

Flamethrower.. maybe a little over the top hehe
I reckon to keep ur steering wheel on, u need to do something bout the allen key nuts.. i.e. burr them or solder them (so u can still take it off later, just need to heat up the solder...!)
