Replacing the 7M-GTE Head Gasket Mon, 14 October 2002 22:28 Go to next message
Hey Guys,

A few days ago I was unlucky enough to lose the head gasket in my 7M-GTE powered Soarer. Was wondering if anyone out there has the same engine and have replaced the existing gasket with either a copper or metal one and torqued the head bolts down to the recommended 72 pounds?

I'm just about to embark on it and so far the only price i've found on a metal 2mm gasket was over $750 from BD4s in Sydney

Thanks for any advice anyone can give me

Dan

I think Dominator, who advertise/sponsor here, can do a copper HG for about $200-250.

Here's some good advice, dont go to BD4'S. Quite a few ppl have had some expensive experiences with them, HKSPETE, and a few others.

Don't get BD4s to put it in, they'll rip you off. if you want a HKS MHG then you can buy it off them, just don't let them put it in.

Thanks for the info...

The price from BD4s of $750 didn't even include installation, that was just for the gasket! I called Dominator yesterday for a copper gasket and the price seems reasonable... the block and the head needs to be machined apparently to put an O-Ring groove in it? this means i'm going to need to take the entire engine out and take it to them to get done

am i correct in assuming that?

if it comes to that, i'd prefer to put a standard Toyota OEM gasket in the car and just have the head machined then torque the head bolts to 72 pound (only had the car on the rd for a month before the gasket went)... no engine removal involved and hopefully this won't happen again

To get the machining done for O-Ring you would have to pull the engine out and a complete strip down.
Yes, you can fix the BHG insitu if you use an OEM HG.
You may also be able to do insitu with a copper HG, but you'd have to check with dominator. There will be thickness and softness issues I imagine. May be better than an OEM repair.
If you go OEM my experiences tell me there are two gaskets made by AJUSA, one only has the really thick firing ring - this is likely to be the one you want. Available from Fabre around Lakemba or Robbos Campsie even cheaper.

Also, while your there, change your welch plugs. Cheap part that can cause expensive repairs.
I have a couple of spare heads if thats any use to you.

a couple of spare heads just lying around? haha Very Happy

i haven't even started taking the car apart yet... that'll hopefully happen on friday. After i get the head pressure tested i'll certainly let you know if its cracked because i'll probably replace it rather than get it welded.

Thanks heaps for the help so far
