the socket with a bolt is called a "Ball joint"
you wont be pulling this apart, youll have to find the end of the ball joint and unhook there.

this is just in general remembering this pic is from a TA22 manual.
cheers

People most commonly try to hit the ball joint out by hitting on the loosened nut with the hammer (seems straight forward) and they drive themselves crazy doing so.
The ball joint has a tapered shaft and it slots into a corresponding taper on the "knuckle arm" as it is so called in the drawing above!
Rapping the side of the "knuckle arm" (at the point closest to where the tapered tie rod end ball joint is well at home) with a sizeable hammer (and don't fairy tap it), shocks the taper and often results in the two parts coming apart (it is necessary to hold a dolly at the opposing side of the knuckle end to where it will be struck).
Failing that? the ball joint separator thing is an awesome tool.

Oh GOD dont hit the thing with a hammer, unless you want to buy new ball joints and then have the fun of installing them. Get your self a ball joint seperator, these are available at Repco. All you do is insert the forked end into the ball joint and then tighted the bolt in the middle and it shall force the other end of the ball joint to pop out. Tool costs like 15 bucks and takes about 10seconds to do. Much easier than being a tight arse and trying to use hammers to take it out.

thanks for all the info guys. i dont have to actually remove the tie rods because only the control arm seems to be bent. guess i'll just take the seperated control arm/steering arm along with my car to somewhere that has the tools to re-install them. i'll need to get the wheels realigned anyways so i guess it wont cost that much more to get the parts swapped in. now... if i can just find a way to get there without having to turn left

Adam, the way that I have described actually does NO damage to the items in question - it is merely a matter of shocking the taper free (as a fitter and machinist of 15yrs, I am pretty familiar with self locking tapers and how they work). I have used both methods on numerous occassions.
The separator is VERY capable of fucking the rubber boot, but it is quicker and easier.
Make no assumptions about being a tight arse if you DON'T understand the method being employed.
end rant

I use both the bolt-up type seperator, and the big hammer method, depends on the job, how easy it is to get at, etc. I don't seem to remember ever actually stuffing a rubber unless is was already leaking/split anyway. Also, the ball joints aren't that hard to replace, or that expensive.
