Dave, I read about your car on the members site and you've done to your diff EXACTLY what I want to do to mine. I'm seriously interested in knowing how you did it and what was required..
Your assistance would be GREATLY APPRECIATED..
If your around, or anyone knows who/where you are, could they please let me know?
Thanks
Daniel.

No, doesn't look like that, cos you have a disk brake rear end. I dont' want that just yet.

Into
Ra23 (diff housing if required)
Don't want any fancy brakes or suspension
Just the diff.

I don't think you'll be getting any feedback from Dave on this one. He hasn't been around for a hell of a long time.
From memory though what he did was get the right model Hilux diff that has a width close to that of the RA23 and then build a jig to cut off all the mounts and swap the mounts from the RA23 diff to the Hilux one.

I've done this conversion, I know the 'secret' code.
You can use Hilux RN 10/13/25/27 rear axles, something like 1968 to 1975 or so I think. I have two of these puppies at the moment - and nope - not for sale.
They measure 1370mm wheel mounting face to w. m. face, and that compares with the 1374mm I have measured on an RA23 axle. The Hilux axle complete weights 85kg to the complete RA23 axle at 69kg. The G series LSD I have adds 5kg over a std open centre diff.
I have used a Hilux Surf G series 8 inch LSD and it bolts straight in and mates perfectly with the axles.
You will need to re-stud these axles to 4 studs if you are keeping the original RA23 configuration. I know that the std RA23 steel wheels just clear the bigger (10 inch) Hilux drums as opposed to the original 9 inch jobbies.
You will need to provide 2 RA23 rear axles for this job. One is the test jig used to check and measure the locations for the suspension mounting points, the other axle is sacrificed as extra metal needs to be cut away to get the complete mounting points off.
Be cunning while this is being done and get the brake line T-piece transferred over as well to match the RA23 axle.
Then you will need to sort out the flange plate on the diff nose as G series plates are bigger than T series ones. While it would be cheaper to keep the T series driveshaft and change the flange plate, for the increased torque of my motor and the fact that I have a complete G series rear end in front of me, I will be cutting down a (longer) RN27 driveshaft to fit rather than use the original RA23 driveshaft.
Hope this answers a few questions for you.

So, lemme get this right.
We take
1 RN27 Axle body/housing(diff housing)
1 Hilux Surf 8 inch LSD diff center
2 RN 10/13/25/27 rear axles (including drums for either end)
Old equipment
1 complete RA23 axle/diff including drums
1 gutted RA23 axle housing(diff housing) for scrap bits of metal.
Is this correct?

I would assume (never assume as it = ASS out of U and ME)here
that your first No. 1 above and No. 2 are one in the same, a complete single Hilux rear end, drum to drum, all inclusive, diff and even handbrake cables, either a RN10 or 13 or 25 or 27.
You need to make sure that you get a G series rear end, and I got mine from an RN27 and a RN25. I have sighted a RN10/13 Hilux and it had a G Series rear end as well. Satisfy yourself here.
G series LSD's are available on other model Hilux's, like SR5's for example. Mine came from a Surf. Don't limit yourself here, look at as many Hilux's as you can, you never know what bargains might be found.

May as well give the engineering mob a complete axle to use as the measuring jig.
Cheers,
Mitch.

So lemme do a re-take
Replacement Equip:
1: 1x RN27 Diff including handbrake cable, axles and drums.
2: 1x Hilux Surf(or similar) 8 inch LSD diff center
Old equipment
3: 1 complete RA23 axle/diff including drums
4: 1 complete RA23 diff for scrap and jig
Is this correct?

<sigh>.....maybe I was unclear before.....
1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. Yes, and this is the test/measuring jig.
4. Yes, but it only needs to be the bare axle housing, minus diff, axles, brakes etc, as this will be cut up for its mounts to go onto the RN27 rear end.
Don't forget to think about your tailshaft as well.

why dont you talk to a diff shop - they can answer all of these questions for you, and even offer advice. After all, arent they the people who would be doing it for you???
Furthermore, please perform a search, this question is very well covered in previous threads.

A) Spoken to diff shops. They know what a hilux diff is. They don't know what a ra23 is, hence the problem. They don't know which diff I need. Basically, the diff shops I've spoken to are fucking useless, and usually put me onto commodore diffs, which I definately don't want.
B) Have done a search.Evidently my searching abilites aren't that great, because I dont' come up with anything of interest.
c) It's probably not going to be a diff shop doing it as per above.

I didn't exactly want to start a flame war, as the guys above, particularly ra23 have been very helpful. Guess some people just gotta jump in at the wrong time.

Cool 1,
mate that looks very close to what I am doing. Are they the Skyline rear brakes ?
Oh and Stradlater, Daves RA23 had Disc brakes & LSD when it was sold. Prior to that it was Hilux Drums with a Detroit locker !

the search function can be a bit dicky - it uses whole string matches only. Hence searching for "hilux diff" it will only respond where it see's the exact text - hilux diff
I meant talking to a diff shop re. what is needed to get the doner diff into the receiving car.

Fair game.
Point taken.
However in my own defence, I did trial many different options on the search engine, as it appears to be whole matches only. Never the less.
As a funny aside, that thread that's in the area about hilux diff's also happens to be perfect.

i ended up buying daves first diff with the detroit in it, that was the longer hilux diff measuring 1410mm or something, much easier too find apparently, and instead of cutting it down i used my fwd offset rims which fill the guards quite nicely, but ended up getting rid of the detroit as it was a bit too harsh for my liking, and put in a prado lsd

Don't suppose a 4wd diff would do the trick would it? IE 4wd rn27 diff? Aside from the fact that it would be 6 stud, would it still work?
