icon4.gif  Help!! GZE won't fire! *solved* Tue, 14 December 2004 09:02 Go to next message
Just put the new flowed head on today, put it all back together, lined everything up correctly, plugged everything back in, new spark plugs, turned the key….nothing..rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr the motor just spins and spins..it’s got fuel, got spark, got compression..am I missing something here?? Doesn’t matter how far the timing would be out it would stil backfire, fart, or dribble, but nothing..took the plugs out..yep, there is fuel on them..grounded one..yep, she sparks…it isn’t even kicking!! It’s kinda pissing me off, cos I know it will be something stupid..i stuffed the knock sensor up (broke it off by accident) but even then they just run in limp mode right? It should still fire..

Any help or ideas would be great thanks guys!

I have seen this problem , the coil pack signals are around the wrong way , and so the packs are till firing , but the wrong pack at the wrong time.

EI the pack for 1 and 4 is firing when you should be firing the pack for 2 and 3.

if coils on wrong then it would back fire

i recon u might have cam timing wrong

does the engine spin over easily

like too easily

do u know that a 4a engine one dowel is up and the other down when on top dead centre

i recently wired a ze and the guys fitted cams on wrong

top dead no1 u need

left cam dowel top with notch at top and notch at right of gear

right cam u need dowel at bottom (not straight up and dowen slightly off vertical) and notch on gear at top and one on left

the 2 notchs wil lline up next to each other in the middle

If they were not connected properly, you wouldnt have spark.

Got a timing light so you can make sure ignition is all setup ok?

are your plugs very wet with fuel
maybe they wont fire when in the head

but they fire out of head

maybe not enough fuel

maybe crank sensor is out

take cover off it and try movin it a tooth at a time
eventually u will get there

ok it appears to not have a great deal of compression..a skimmed ZE head, and a 1mm 3layer metal gasket 'SHOULD' if anything bumped up the compression..so what i'm thinking is 'maybe' i mesured the shims wrong and there keeping the valves open.. is there a difference between the overlap (on the stock non-adjustable gears) for bigport - smallport cams??

hit the nail on the head with that one my friend...while i was putting the g/box and clutch in, my mate was doing the cams, he is a qualified toyota mechanic, so i just took his word for it...i suppose everyone is entitled to a stuf up now and again.. thanks guys Very Happy

ohh and by the way, the ZE winds up so bloody fast now with the headwork!!
