Just Got into melbourne When I noticed a whinning comming from my gbox climbes higher in pitch with the engine revs sounds kinda like a blower... added oil to the box as it has a leak but no change. hasnt effected gears in anyway... mate said it could be a worn bearing any other ideas? anyone got a similar problem or had something similar with a w box??

Does it happen in all gears? or just some?
Mine had a whine that happened in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th.
2 gears weren't meshing properly (throw away box)
All gears will tend to indicate bearing

yeah i think its all gears but in 4th and 5th i dont think it as noticable due to less load being put on it, so bearing then aye? how serious do you think it would be? like must fix asap or wait for a bit and maybe get it recoed when... it gets worse. how much for a reco you think?
okay thanks for your help..........
cheers

Dunno man
Doing it yourself, will prolly cost just the bearings, a few breakables, and someone to press the old bearings off, new bearings on.

yeah, AE86Boy.. I have the same 'problem' with my box.
sounds like a V8 supercar kinda sound.
weird.
not had any problems.. yet haha.
got a new 6 speed box to go in there anyway.
then will pull bellhousing off.. and pull the box apart I guess
dunno if its worth anything as it is anyway

if a w55 is the same as a t50 in that 4th gear is 1:1, and it isn't whining in 4th, its bearings. this happened to my old celica. 1st was bad, 2nd was worst, 3rd better than 1st, 4th fine(hence direct 1:1) and 5th slightly noticable.

Yes, they still have load, but there is no lateral load, its all in one direction.
