say i downloaded a movie in xvid etc and wanted to make it into a dvd video, what program do you guys reckon i should use?
at the moment i've been using InterVideo DVD copy, which is ok i guess but some don't work on the dvd player i have.
i've also tried Ulead DVD movie factory, but has proved almost useless as it won't compress a movie to fit on 1 DVD.
so....... any recommendations?
Thanks.

Nero 6 Ultra Edition
I downloaded a copy from Kazaa, with the key and all, it is the best program ever, you can do anything, design your own menus all with the click of a few buttons, add chapters to movie files, and the easiest part is all u have to do is select add video files and it automatically re-encodes them and burns them on the DVD, it takes a while, but generally if u start it all before you go to bed it will be done or nearly done by the time u get up.
it took me something like 10 hours to re-encode Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas and Requium For A Dream (both just under 1G in size) and then burn. re-encoding took 7 hours and the burning took 3, but I am using a laptop so burning is a bit slower than normal.
But yeah either download a copy of nero 6 Ultra or go and buy a copy, it seriously is the most simple program to use, and as far as I know it is capable of doing everything you need to do!The file name was 'Nero 6.0.0.9+Nero Vision Express 2+InCD 4.0.1' it is only 43Mb so it wont take long to download.

I think that your talking about Nero Recode and not the Ultra edition which is now called Reloaded. These are available from the Ahead Nero site for trial download. Another pretty good App is called Dvd Shrink which uses the Nero burning engine.

Ive found that if you use Nero it will transcode(not my term) and burn at the same time, so it will create a dvd file out of just about anything and then burn it as a dvd, easy as.
Dvd shrink is good, but it only makes it smaller so you can burn onto 4.7gig disc's, most dvd movies are 5.5-8gig.
I might use dvd shrink for the movies i hire from them idiot video stores , it will remove the encyptions too so you can run your dvd player thru your vcr and record without drama's, shhh i didnt say that?.
Cheers

If you want the best out:
use TMPGENC. It's a little harder to use - but there's plenty of tutorials on how to use it at:

I like using Shrink because most of the the you can fit a Dvd 9 format film onto a Dvd 5 format(4.7)DVD if you take away all the crap you dont need, like Css, region and languages. If can pay for dual layer discs you can do a straight copy and lose nothing. This is only to make a back up copy of dvd's that you already own of course. I'll have to give that TMPGENC a go as well. I got a kicker of a MAlware off a 0day appz site a while back while experimenting with software. It even got into the MBR and survived a reinstall, Killdisk to the rescue.

kewl, thanks guys.
my burner came with TMPGEnc 2.5 lite, never used it though, i'll try and learn how to use it, but as ra23mad said, it looks kinda complicated.
to copy dvd's (to "back up" my personal collection of course) i use DvdXcopy platinum. it does everything for you, and it's never not copied a dvd due to copy protection etc.
i must have the wrong nero at the moment because it will not make a dvd out of anything but .vob files etc...

You should ditch that DVDxcopy straight away. The I found it pretty unstable and it leaves that Backup screen at the start of every DVD. As I said before I use DVDshrink in conjunction with Nero Reloaded and its 18r of the DVD copying world, pretty bullet proof. If you have an ISDN connection take teh three trial packages form the nero site, including Nerovision express. Theres some good dvd reauthoring appz. If you dont have an isdn then ask one of your mates that have . Happy dvd collecting.

Never get your digital pictures developed again because with Nerovision you can make a slideshow that will play on your DVD player and you can view them on your TV. You can choose your backround music, menu and add movie segments. All for the price of a dvd-r,+r. Make's a lot more sense then paying for them to be processed.
