advice needed: Ga70 BLMVZ '88 GTEU Sat, 18 December 2004 05:27 Go to next message
Hi all, first post so sorry if this is redundant in any way - I did a quick search but i'm on dialup so I thought I'd just post a newbie thread heh.

I have a 1988 GA70 BLMVZ 1G-GTEU twin turbo 2.0L 5 speed supra and I have 2 issues and need some advice.

I just got raped for over $700 having the timing belt changed and the oil changed as well as the air filter replaced. Brisbane Tuning & Turbocharging in W-Gabba did the work and my gdamn plastic skid plate fell off on the freeway because they tied the thing back on with zip ties - aparently the bolts were shorn off so they thought that was acceptable. Whatever.

Anyway, they say that the turbos are on the way out so I have to decide if I'm either going to replace or convert to a larger turbo. The performance of the vehicle is pretty dismal stock so I'm leaning towards just tidying it up and flogging it. The lifters also need doing (sounds like a bunch of marbles).

Questions:

1) Is it worth doing a turbo upgrade?

2) How much denero will I plan on spending to get the lifters done?

I'd hate to seel the car as is because it's just going to cause whoever buys it a bunch of heartache. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

its definitiely doing a turbo upgrade, there is one word to explain the CT12's, SHITHOUSE

I am going to be undergoing an upgrade on mine very soon as I have just picked up a second hand manifold from japan capable of housing twin T28's off an R33 GTR Smile

There are heaps of second hand kits floating around these days due to the higher number of 1GGTE powered supras, soarers and chasers coming into the country.

Dont rebuild the CT12's its just not worth it when you can find a single kit for around the $1200-$1500 mark on a regular basis, in fact i think import bitz have one right now Very Happy

sell it or do an engine conversion 1JZ/2JZ/7M/1UZ

the money you waste on a turbo upgrade can get u another engine better suited to the heavy chassis such as the ones ive suggested.

also 1G's dont have lifters, best to double check that noise something else might be ready to poo itself.

ok rob, so you reckon that you could do an engine conversion for the cost of a turbo upgrade?

my upgrade is going to cost me $3500 with everything, including engine management and injectors and I will be making an estimated 220 rwkw, to convert to any of the motors above it would cost a minimum of $5K and you would most probably still have a stock engine, barring any bolt ons that might come with your front cut...

Thanks for the input guys - it came with a Bulls*it 3yr warranty so i'll make a claim on fixing what needs fixing and get rid of it.

Can anybody in brisbane recommend a competent mechanic to get involved with this?

Cheers,

LOL MR1G got sand in your vagina today? Laughing

nope i dont reckon its cheaper to do an engine conversion at all. Im saying you can use the money you waste on a turbo upgrade for a better engine.

perhaps a better way to put it would be "you can put the money you waste on a turbo upgrade towards an engine swap for an engine better suited to the GA70 chassis"

you just want to argue with me for the sake of arguing cause of our past disagreements. I cant even remember what the hell we used to argue about, but whatever it was get over it d00d.

whatever you decide geck0 good luck with it man i know how u feel about the dodgey mechanic work, it happens to all of us.

EDITED: i was replying to MR1G

I think it's a great motor - it just wasn't meant to be fitted in a tank like the supra.

i know about the potential of 1G's i owned one for several years.

i also know about MORBST, and it was built by guys who had access to heaps of cheap 1G's at a time that the 1G was before its popularity, hence not costing them alot when they blew them up.

whether or not the 1G is a good engine is NOT the issue here

Aussie do you know how much GA70's weigh compared to TA22's?

try and do low 10's with a 1G powered GA70.

I have been told that the people to go to regarding jz powered supras is Millenium Motorsports. I haven't been there yet but have heard nothing but good things about them. I don't think you are going to find anyone who specialises in 1g's so I reckon Millenium would be the go. they have a website with details on it.
