A340E automatic upgrade info - A must ! Wed, 16 October 2002 03:34 Go to next message
Hey all A340E auto owners,

I just spoke with Michael from MV Automatics in South Australia, who is a Soarer specialist.
Just got a quote on a Stage 2 upgrade for the automatic gearbox, which includes lifting stall RPM to around 2,500 rpm, and reducing shift time to <0.5 sec, rather than the factory 2.0 sec. It also removes the "misfire" that commonly occurs when upgrading the exhaust.

He also offers a Stage 3 kit which allows full manual control of the gearbox, but is suggested for track use only or for conversions that use an aftermarket computer which cannot control the auto gearbox (e.g. A'PEXi PowerFC).

Prices !

Stage 2 kit, including all parts and fitting instructions:
$385 + freight from SA.

Stage 3 kit, including all Stage 2 items, plus electronic controller which plugs into the gearbox loom.
$685 + freight.

As soon as I save up enough, this is my next upgrade. Can't wait to whoop some more rice boy ass Razz

Not too sure exactly...

From what I believe, you have to fit a modified valve body, and return your old one. They provide all instructions, and are available for telephone support if you get stuck.
Not sure if it includes a transmission cooler or not (something I would definitely get).

Not sure, but Michael from MV Automatics claims that this mod increased life and reduces wear on the gearbox (due to less clutch slippage I guess?).
What isn't said is how much extra wear the diff will get with all those chirps between gears.

Get yourselves a big-arsed trans oil cooler as well.

Strength of gearboxes ?

Diff wearing? - the Torsen should be OK!

No Torsen diff here Sad

Did you get a trans cooler from MV Autos Mel ?
I'll have to call them again to ask about what is included with the shift kit.

The oil cooler was priced separate to the shift kit.
It was a real hassle to fit because it's tight under the bonnet
In the end they put it in FRONT of the radiator (not the best spot- I know)
I didn't want to lose the foglamps, and other spots would have had poor airflow / problems plumbing.
Michael suggests strongly the cooler to keep the trans reliability up.

How big is the core ?

In front of the radiator shouldn't be that bad if everyone mounts intercoolers there. If I ever went front mount, then there might be problems... air would have to pass through the intercooler, trans cooler, then radiator. Hardly a nice situation.

What exactly did you get done in the upgrade ? Just the shift kit, or new convertor + stall increase as well ?

The cooler is about 300mm across, rectangular and 7(?) rows (I forget - quite big anyway).
At the time I got the shift kit, cooler and sligtly higher stall speed convertor.

Has anyone got any more info on the stage 3 kit? Might be tempted to shove that in, and toss the factory wiring right out.

Wonder how an A340 would appreciate twin turbos Evil or Very Mad

I asked this question when I was on the phone to them. The answer basically was "Any decent mechanic should be able to fit it without a problem" Smile
It also comes with installation instructions, and telephone support is available if you get stuck.
Can't ask for much more than that !

Definitely fit a trans cooler...We've just got the Cressida back and we will have 2 trans coolers fitted this week...1 (a V8 cooler) for the transmission, and 1 (a 4cyl cooler) which will be spliced in to help cool the power-steering fluid.

(I'd have gone bigger with both, however I'm running out of room to stick things in there Confused )
