4AGZE Intercooler location - can it be moved? Sun, 19 December 2004 03:35 Go to next message
My mare [edit - mate]) Shocked has a AE93 SX and is thinking about doing the 4AGZE conversion but doesn't want the scoop on the bonnet. Is it possible for this motor's top mounted intercooler to be located elsewhere, like in a front mount for example?

Your mare? Is she one horsepower at the hoofs, or only at the flywheel?

Sorry ... couldn't help myself. I think that a front-mount would certainly be preferable for more reasons than just aesthetics (including better airflow, less heat soak and greater efficiency). However, more likely to be "install new front-mount" rather than "move existing top mount". I am sure others will be able to comment from their personal experience ...

Yes moving it is fine, in fact it's a very good idea.

Things to look out for though, avoid routing your pipework over your exhaust manifold for less heatsoak. And try to keep the pipes as short as possible, especially important on a ZE where the intercooler is post-throttle.

The factory one works fine up to a point, but if your mate hammers it constantly of track races it then a bigger/better IC might be a wise move.
