Crying or Very Sad
My new ae86 (with a 1st gen map sensed 4age 16v) is making unhealthy noises above 3500-4000rpm.

It's somewhere between a 'whirring' and a 'pinging' sort of noise. if i didn't know better i'd say it sounded like a rattle, but it comes in consistently at the same engine rpm every time, and i'm worried. I know what 'knock' can do to an engine, and i dont know whether this is knock or something more harmless. someone told me it was the valve clearances needing adjusting, but my mechanic reckons the valve clearances are fine.

if it IS pinging, what can i do to solve the problem? the engine is unmodified, and i didn't do the swap from the 4ac myself.

i've been made aware that intake temps can induce pinging, and i've been thinking that a cold air intake can't hurt, (probably help a fair bit actually)... any other suggestions?

I'm already running on BP ultimate (98RON), so an increase in octane is probably futile.

another suggestion is that it could just be a bearing somewhere.

Ideas as to what this could be?

Could be a timing problem. If the timing advance is off, it can cause detonation. Just a thought. Smile

thought of something else.

since i didn't do the conversion from 4ac to 4age, could it be that whoever did used the wrong ecu or something, and the engine is leaning out and pinging at 3500-4000rpm, because the ecu is telling it to?

thoughts?

ok
i just did some 'diagnostics'

the noise is not there in neutral or in first gear, but it IS there in second and third.

does this mean that it's a gearbox issue?

it really doesn't sound like pinging, more like the sound of a worn out old turbo spooling up.

i got nothing...

ok
took it to another mechanic, this one who is a family friend.

he confirms, it's pinging, but it's a 'load dependent' type thing.

it's looking more and more like it could be the wrong kind of ecu for the engine, and it's leaning out at a certain rev range.

those of you with 4age's, feeling generous, can you tell me the part number on your ecu box, and what type of car it came from?

mine is 89661-12180.

help... Crying or Very Sad

pinging only ever starts when an engine is under load, i know all about pinging as my engine alays does it Crying or Very Sad and pinging is not a good thing as you could crack a piston and so forth from it, if its only slight pinging use some premium fuel for the time being till you get it fixed but i'd say get the timing done on the engine or perhaps even try some colder heat range plugs, can also start to happen if your air filter is clogged up big time.

ok. guess i'm going to have to basically take it to a mechanic and say 'tune this sucker up, do the timing, plugs, the lot, and get rid of that ping' and hope that they manage it.

if someone took the ECU from a small port 4age and stuck it on a big port, could that cause problems like this?

DONE!

it was just induction noise, i.e. the tvis whistling/rattling as it was halfway open/shut. I now thrash the guts out of this engine unmercifully.
