So what do I need exactly ? 4A-GE Sun, 19 December 2004 13:45 Go to next message
Hey guys !

Well after looking at a few threads about mods for the 4AC I decided what would I exactly need to but a 4A-GE in my car.

The car is an 1985 Toyota Corolla CS Sedan. Its not the prettiest looking thing on the road but I love her Very Happy being my first car and all.Since (from what ive read/heard) its not worthwhile to mod the 4AC and a 4A-GE conversion would be my best bet.Ive probably posted all this before but what the hell !

Ok first question - People say I need to change the fuel lines/tank etc since im using Leaded petrol at the moment ? Ive been using Vortex/Premium fuel as of late because of the cancelled sale of Leaded petrol, fuel seems to get in ok so whats the deal with this ? and ive also noticed alot of people doing this on the older version Corolla's with no mention of modifications to their standard fuel system.

Second - Will it bolt straight in ? or will I need to get some engine mounts made up or something ?

Thirdly - Is this a time consuming project ? meaning will certain parts need to be custom made etc ? how much will wiring set me back ?

I know that stuff like brakes/suspension will need to be looked at for this kind of swap so ive looked at that aspect.

Sorry if Ive sounded like every other post regarding this conversion but since im holidays with alot of times on my hands I thought id post this up Very Happy

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Is it an AE82 or AE71? If it's an AE82, then you'd be best off stealing as many parts from an AE82 twincam as you can. If it's an AE71, then look for stuff posted by The Witzl and myself regarding similiar conversions both of us did.

keep using the fuel's you're comfortable with - if you get your conversion engineered and have CAT fitted to the exhaust then you'd have to avoid LRP.

Toyota engines have been able to consume unleaded since the 18R (early 1980's). FWIW, i run my MA61 & RA40 on Pulp (or LRP if i feel stingy).

i would be guessing, but you're probably best obtaining a fuel tank from an EFI car - or swapping over the fuel pickups/pump from an EFI car. The main thing is a suitable fuel pickup in the tank and an EFI pump. The return line and vent (to charcoal cannister) are still used.

Also, existing fuel lines from tank to engine are fine to re-use.

what mr shin said - search for this - you could also try twincam.org as it too will have articles on this conversion

yes- there is a equation for this
Total_time= Expected_time+(Expected_time*0.5)+((Expected_time* 0.5)*Frustration_factor)
where Frustration_factor is a magical number based on your ability to scrounge parts and help from your mates - the more of both, the lower the number

hey dude i've done this conversion myself about 8-9 months ago now
mine was a 1986 cs-x hatch btu had the 4ac in it

i had everything i needed for the conversion before i started. i used the 100kw 4age engine with the standard 4ac gearbox. i also used a twin cam EFi fuel tank and fuel lines, the twin cam fuel lines are larger and can carry more fuel, although a lot of people have been fine with the 4ac fuel lines so i guess its up to you, however it took my a fuckload of time to get the fuel lines all in and stuff as they had some slight kinks to them that i culdnt bend back Razz No engine mounts need to be modified it will all line up and bolt in. It would be extremely helpful to have a couple of guys give you hand installing it. you will also need an engine crane for the removal of the 4ac and dropping down of the new engine. I'd also recommend installing the gearbox onto the 4age while the 4ag is out of the car and then drop the whole engine and gearbox in the bay as one item, thats what we did and it was so much easier. then its just a matter of lining up the mounts. removal of the old engine and dropping in of the new one shouldn't take you more than a weekend if you've only got one other guy helpin ya, me and my mate did most of the install minus fuel and wiring in one weekend, although they were 6am starts Razz and close to 8pm finishes but hey. as for the time it really depends on if you have everything you need for the conversion, how good you are with tools, how much help you have. i had my car professionally wired up and a few other things fixed up mainly bcause i was lazy and this was my first engine swap, my first car too actually and the wiring cost my 500 bones, this culd be done cheaper i guess but like i said i had extras done at the time central lockin, alarm install amp install and a few switches for things i wanted, manual thermo fan ect ect.

Look for some of my posts about it, there is PLENTY of infomation, if not all the information you'll need in these forums, this is where i got all my info from.

Good luck and PM me if you need and specific info!

Cheers
