Noisey motor AE86/4AG Mon, 20 December 2004 10:46 Go to next message
Just noticed the other day that when i rev to around 5000rpm (fast or slow)there is a strange rattling/vibration coming from the front, i was thinking low oil, i checked and she was low so i changed it but it made no difference.

I know my shims need a freshen up, but it sounds like that noise when you try to change gears without a clutch, just not as loud, but still noticable.

I had a quick search didnt score any points so i thought id ask in here.

Anybody got any idea as to what it might be.

I also noticed at 4000rpm if i change to gears semi fast (im not that quick) it makes a very similar noise, just alot quiter, so im thinking clutch but it still got heaps of bite and the pedal still feels good, could it be the shims or the release bearing.

Just looing for people thoughts.

Cheers

Steve

ok...worst case senario...crack in a piston, mine started making a tiny bit of noise when you get up it a bit, then it got worse and worse, it eventually did it when it was just idling! but it didn't seem to loose much if any power..i've heard that when you do a big end you actually feel a loss in power..i eventually shattered that piston into 4 large pices, and the rod exiting out the block, basicly rendering the whole motor a F#$% up..

as i said..worst case..you could have spat a shim??broken valve collet?? take off cam timing covers and have a poke around

Thanks guys, it could be the shims, i highly doubt it would/could be the Bearings, there only 20,000kms old and i dont drive hard at all, maybe say once a week.

There hasnt been a noticable lose in power, there is still power when the noise is present, not that i keep it there for long.

To be honest i didnt notest the noise untill the weekend just gone, i painted me front bumper then the noise appeared, i surely do hope its something loose.

Cheers guys, ill take a serious look over the weekend and report my findings.

Cheers

Had a quick check today and it seems that there is a more profound grinding/rubbing noise on the inlet side, exhaust side sounds sweet, but the inlet sounds rough.

Ill remove the cam covers on the weekend sometime and take a closer look.

Cheers
