go have a search on performance forums - quite a bit of discussion on there about them (and the way they fail)

i have spoken to people who love them, and people who hate them..
if i was seriously going to an elec water pump, i'd look to Meziere (sp?)

Hmmm, well I was consideremplating using an 'electric booster pump' for my intercooler, after having heard nothing but good words from other people using them for the same purpose. Thing is, I've always heard skeptical words of the bigger water pump, so I'm not sure... Anyone got anything to add?

Make sure you get your radiator reconditioned BEFORE putting the pump in.
I went through 3 pumps and ended going back to stock, then realised my radiator was 70% blocked. Still not sure if the pump would've worked or not.

If your gonna run an electric water pump then you need to remove your thermostat in favour of their ect for managing temperature.
The reason why the centrifugal pumps can fail is if their is a restriction in the flow it stuffs the motor. In their instruction manuals they give you an option of running their ECT or drilling a hole in your thermostat to allow some flow whilst the engine is still cold.
Everyone i spoke to however, who has done the drilling option it has stuffed in a couple months max. all up the power gains of removing the mechanical pump are negligable, and the hassles with either removing the machnical impeller, or removing the water pump pulley make it time consuming and frustrating.
IMO...if it aint broke, dont fix it

the new water pumps are perfect, the older ones had problems with the seals tho,
the booster pump is awesome, have one on the misses car for her intercooler and it hasnt missed a beat in the year and a half its been running for, they are magnetic drive so no shaft and seal to leak

when they first came out a lot of race guys swapped to them to reduce the parasitic loss at the engine, a lot of expensive engines went bye bye when the water pump went the same way after only a few races. There were other problems too... at full rpm the electric pump couldnt get enough flow around the engine and they got a bit of heat creep. DC tried to work with many of the teams to fix the problems but to date there arent many left that still run them. Some of the rally guys also complained that they couldnt handle the rough stuff and the housing were crackings, but that could just be the way they mounted them I guess.
If you were using it to drive a water to air cooler id say yeah go for it, to cool the engine.. well id be doing a lot of reasearch before risking my engine.

FWIW TVR cars in the UK use them on their six litre (?) V-12's that ran at Le Mans.
Seemed to work okay on those.

That site is increadible. They do direct replacements
http://www.meziere.com/index.php?pgName=wp520
The belt still goes round the pulley, but the pulley is idle and behind it is an elecric motor running the original water pump veins.
Quite ingenious.

My 1UZ one costs around $200 or so (can't remember). I'm selling a brand new one (see for sale section) as I thought I needed it when I bought a DC water pump.
I'd pay $500 for an electric one like this. I spent a crapload more on all the DC components (EWP, new pipes, relays etc.)
