The turbo i fitted to the mr2 was a standard ct20 of a 3tgte.
The turbo in the photo is a st165 ct26 with a t04 front wheel. Which is very very big for a 4agze should come on full boost around 4000rpm if tuned good. Good luck you should see a lot of power with that turbo hanging of your motor.
PS. If you find that its to big and comes on to late for what you want i'll swap you for a standard one. lol.

To my knowledge, CT series turbos are not roller-bearing are they? If this is the case, on a little 1600, with the exhaust housing and wheel from a 2L, and a T04 cover, I don't imagine that you will see boost anywhere on the happier side of 4500 rpm, infact I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't come on full boost until around 5000.
I am currently building a 4AGTE also, and have a HKS GT2510 for it. With the 2510's ultra-small exhaust housing, and extra compressor blade (unique to HKS GT series) I still don't expect this turbo to make full boost until around 3500 or just over.
Maybe time to reconsider your turbo option. What you have would be quite nice on a 3sgte (although slower spooling than stock CT26) Maybe for what you want, a T28 roller bearing (S2 S14 200SX onwards) or even a T3-style roller bearing unit from an RB20DET, as used on the 4AGTE build in the tech section would be the go?
Cheers
Chris

use a CT20,
the ones I have seen have been on Turbo Diesel Hilux's
2.4Litre I think, can be had for about $300 - $400 I think
its smaller and would probably suit your motor better.
correct me if im wrong.....

TA22-3SGTE:
Swap?? sure...... NOT I only fitted the TO4 compressor wheel a short while before I got rid of the 3TGTE, i'm not finished playing with it yet!
Statts:
You are correct, they are conventional bush style bearing turbos. I think that with 8.9:1 compression ratio, it wont be as laggy as you think. I agree that your HKS turbo will be far more driveable and provide a better spread of power across the rev range, but with an upper rev limit of 8500rpm, i'm willing to wait till 4 grand before much starts to really happen... and I dont want to limit myself to 14psi boost with a ceramic turbine Nissan OEM turbo.
BoRaZ
the CT20 is an agricultural piece of shite, designed for constant airflow diesels, not high revving, high performance petrol motors. I have used these in the past, and will never go back. Money permitting, I'd have a nice Garrett Ball Bearing GT series turbo, matched nicely to the 1600 4AGE... maybe I need a career change.
Cheers
Phil

True, you would be limited to around 1 bar with the RB20DET turbo, but the T28 roller bearing uses a steel turbine wheel. These turbo's are good for around 1.1 bar before they start getting inefficient. Adjustabe cam gears could help a bit in getting you on boost earlier. What cams are you using?
Is your engine based on a 4AGE or 4AGZE? When you say 8500 RPM, are you talking useable revs, or all the way to the limiter? Are you using a lightened flywheel with these revs? I looked at lightening my 8.5 inch flywheel, but decided against it considering the revs (I'd like to keep my toes). Juts picked up a 4.5kg billet cromoly unit. Should do the trick.

Chris:
I have a 4AGZE series 2 bottom end, and blue top 4AGE head & cams. I am trying to find out where to purchase a set of adjustable cam gears.
The rev limit will be 8500rpm, and I wont have a lightened flywheel, unless its a properly manufactured (moly) one. I, like you, value my toes.

Sounds very similar to what I have. AE101 4AGZE bottom end, big port head, Toda 272 cams, HKS Valve Springs.
I have HKS adjustable cam gears for mine. They go for $550pr.

There's a guy on here that makes them for 220 bucks exchange. Nice machined alloy vernier cams, not just extra locating pin holes drilled into it.
Bill Sherwood has some, and I think Toby (or ._T_.) knows the guy.
Much easier to swallow than 400-500 smackeroonies.

I'm interested in getting some made up. Dave from Dynatrac was showing me the custom jobies, they look nice. Perhaps this is the same guy.
I've already got my cam gears out and ready for modifying but cant find anyine to do them.

I reckon these people are talking about Noltec Engineering.
I have their phone number at work, can't remember if they are in Melbourne or Sydney. They are the same guys that make the blue urethane bushes. They are now also making slide-adjustable, pillow ball camber tops.
