RT104 mods Wed, 16 October 2002 12:22 Go to next message
Look, i am seriously looking at getting another RT104 for a nice little streeter/sleeper.
Is there any real problems with the 1977 RT104 gen III, what are the manual trannies like, can i get 300hp out of the 18RG/E/U N/A.
Has anyone done any serious mods to these cars/engines ect.

Your dreaming.

Low 200's is possible with a shit load of work and a shit load of money. It means getting every single part in the engine built to race spec. Wouldnt be nice to dive on the road either.

As for the gearbox, they come with W40s, just about the first thing to throw out.

2 other problems with the car:
Suspension sucks.
It rusts everywhere.

Yeah, even TTE didn't get 300hp from their full-house 18R-G race engines. Slap a turbo on the side though and it's a different story - 300hp is a walk in the park for a turbo 18R-G, and it will be a lot nicer to drive than a 200hp atmo 18R-G!

300 hp from NA 18RG? Er, no. Rolling Eyes

If you can actually find a rust free example, do this instead. It will actually be cheaper.

Ummm... there isnt much variation on the 18R avaliable.
Never came out in turbo/blown form.

If you wanted to turbo the 18R, the 18R-GE would be the best. But you would need low comp pistons or a thick copper head gasket to reduce the compression.

You might as well move to a diff engine like the 1G-GTE.
Might even take less work than the 18R-GE -> turbo to get in.

Either was, youll still have to get it engineered, which will mean youll have to upgrade other parts of the car as well... like brakes.

A W50 for the 18R-xxx, not sure what box for a 1G.

A rough guide on price:

Actually the 18R-GEU has 8.3:1 compression from the factory, which is perfect for forced induction. Just bolt on a turbo, upgrade the engine management and fuel system, and you're away!
