yep
GT4 Group A Rallye has a water to air intercooler, adjustable boost control and probably more things that someone else can tell you.

I *think* the GrpA has a wider rear track?
Also different engine mounts? the engine in the GrpA sits angled back a little i think from memory...

Julz,
The ST185 Grp A does not have adjustable boost as standard. They had higher fuel maps so that you can raise the boost.
Fuel cut on the ST185 was 11 PSI and 16-17 PSI for the Grp A.
The water to air I/C is correct.

Thanks Gary, those 2 websites were an awesome help.
Yep, I'm looking at a purchase. Just doing my research at the moment. There are a few ST185's for sale in Sydney for $12-13,000. The Rallye versions sell for more like $19-23,000. I guess being a limited edition helped their resale value.

$12-13k is a bargain
but beware... you get what you pay for... some have been thrashed around a bit by wannabe rally drivers
i looked at quite a few when buying mine
make sure you give it a good going over and test drive

Listen to Danny!!
Unfortunately you do pay for what you get with a GT4.
I bought a standard ST185 and I'm very glad I now have the Group A Rallye.
Chances are that it was looked after better and well serviced by an older die hard Toyota fan. It would be nice to buy a $23k example but thats just icing on the cake. If you are like me you can put up with a cheaper version...then you wont feel so bad when you mod the hell out of it
The few more things different with the Group A Rally (apart from previously mentioned things)are:
* the stiffer sport suspension (springs and struts)
* a very nice short shift kit
* very small aluminium bumpers front and rear (saves a LOT of weight)
* factory water sprayers on the twin core water/air intercooler radiator (they are there but not operational from showroom)
* larger air intake
* better G/box with triple synchros (1st gear is obviously still not dickhead proof because my synchros were shot when I got it)
* different hood and front bumper skin
well theres a few that come to mind right now. But the things I like most would have to be the weight saving. After driving my old standard GT4 and the Carlos Sainz the lighter feel is something that you notice ever time you put your foot down. Times that feeling by a year and I'd say it's worth every extra cent. Also, the lack of horrible heat sink into the intercooler at the lights during summer is something I definitely do not miss having owned 2 air to air 3SGTE's before. I love Water to Air and wouldn't swap it for anything unless I got really serious about drag racing in which I'd go front mount with a huge turbo.
All this info is given without a shred of bias

Celica GT4 Group A Rally, 1991, 5 speed, one owner, 4WD turbo, Number 29 Carlos Sainz Limited, air, alarm, 135000kms, $15990, AAR-37W. DL-16276, www.uniqueautosports.com.au CASTLE HILL 02-9634 8000
If this hasn't got a stuffed engine and had a seriuos accident...then it's a good price! Judging by hte K's though, I'd say it's been a while in the panel shop.
Could be a bargain though, rich guy trading in for something more pricey. It looks stock which is what you want so could be a steal. Definitely worth checking out.

No need to be overly concerned if the car has had panel damage. as long as it's been repaired properly there's no reason why it can't be just as good as one that hasn't. Steve Bignells red GT4 went rolling down an embankment and now it's an award winning showcar. From what I've read on this site, one of the major concerns I would have in buying a GT4 is the clutch. Make sure it's got plenty of meat left on it coz apparently it's a complicated and expensive job.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll be doing some shopping on Saturday! That car at Unique Auto Sports is $17,990, $5000 more than the other standard GT4s for sale around Sydney, but it could be worth it if it's in good nick. It's got a new sports clutch in it too.

Tony,
Keep in mind its also a Group A. so that adds to the price and it is a better model. I'm sure you could negotiate a price around the 15K mark if your persistent.
