Engine conversion into a Toyota Tercel

Hi Guys,
I am looking at getting a 83/84 Tercel as a daily driver and was wondering whether anyone had done any engine conversions into one before.
I was thinking of maybe a 4agze? I really don't know anyhing about these cars, how do they go, guessing that they are a bit slow.
I need a little 4wd to cruise on the dirt roads around where I live. So I thought that this would be prefect...
Anyway, any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Have you searched? I think this conversion has definitely been done and covered on here before.

Yep, a 4AGZE will kill the box, and most likely the transfer case too!

I had a tercel, that was originally the family car that I bought off my parents.
I use to use thing in 4wd in the wet on bitumen, and as much as it use to take the abuse I don't recommend a big conversion.
Yes I have to say that the gearbox doesn't like stress but mine did tow a 800kg unbraked trailer for over 10 years every weekend.
Get the gearbox and transfer case freshened when you decide to do something. If you want to do something then bore out the motor to max get a decent cam and a decent exhaust with extractors. This will get it going fairly well.

Thanks for all of the advice guys, very helpful!
Will have to keep you informed when I decide what I want to do with it, on the plus side I have a 270hp ijz soarer in my garage already so speed duties can be handed to it

i think about this car sometimes
the 3S-GTE has been put into AE82's and AE92's
so there is a good chance then that u can stick a 3S-GTE into a AE95 having a similar engine bay.
it has solid rear end so get an F or G in the back of it and your off
big project i know but its fun to think about it.
