just a thought...
the rust in my tailgate is getting a bit annoying- can i plug the hole with silicone? does silicone react with water, or does it encourage rust?
am i safe to use it?
thanks everyone

You have to watch what silicone you use because once you get it on the metal its a bitch to clean off. And you cant paint over silicon if you ever want to

a work around for this is to spray/paint seam sealer over the silicon and then you can paint it
YES YES it is the back yard way but his Question is a backyard question

you need a nuetral cure silicon.
some silicons give off acetic acid when they cure, and this will make rust worse
check the packet..
if you start using it and it smells like vinegar, you've got the wrong one

Treat the rust first!!!
If you dont, the rust will be back and bigger next winter.
Either cut the rust out, or kill it with rust-converter.

just do this
1.Grind it back
2.Use rust converter on it
3.rough the surface up with the grinder
4.Tape from back
5.bog/fiberglass it
6.remove tape

"dont use silicone, ever" <- what was told to me by a professional panel beater, so i'd say dont use it, do what is recommended above.

Part of the POR15 process is rust conversion (metal-ready).
