ok this is what happened.
started the car fine, warmed up for 5 mins, hopped in and started driving.
the car was driving fine didnt feel or hear anything out of the ordinary. got 500 metres away from home and all of a sudden lost all power. didnt even make it off the road.
it was like i ran out of fuel, but i had over 1/4 of a tank. when i go to start it, it will struggle for a moment, start and then it just cuts out, doesnt want to idle.
had to get the supra towed home, after leaving it on the side of a main road for 5 hours.
please help

Are there any weird noises from the engine?
If not, I would agree with Charles. if it was head related ie no air getting to pistons then you would hear a noise.
I couldn't think of how the spark could stop working on all cylinders unless the igniter died.
So that leaves you with fuel.

thanks guys
i was thinking fuel pump, or a blockage. there are no noises except when the car starts and then dies, the exhaust farts and doesnt sound right.
when it first died it felt like it was out of fuel.
it goes into my mates workshop to tomorrow. does anyone know how hard it is to change the fuel pump or to test it.

if you had a cold-start injector it's real easy - remove fuel line at CSI, stick lineinto a safe receptacle, turn key to IGN and pump should fire up and squirt out.
seeing as you don't have CSI it might be easier to detach the line at the fuel filter and point that pipe into a safe receptacle and do the IGN thing.
if you have an external pump it should be obvious where you can remove the line to test for basic functioning of pump.
most modern ECUs will run either do a quick priming pump (run for a few seconds) or run at reduced speed until engine gets up to idle speed.
if you want to test for performance of pump (e.g. pressure) then you'll need some sort of T-adaptor and a fuel pressure gauge. But i'd say that these pumps either work or not.
to remove pump, drain fuel from tank (look in disgust at all the gunk you've just collected from the tank), remove tank from car (exhaust is usually in the way), remove intank-pump from tank, replace with walpro unit (or something similar), re-attach everything in roughly the same order you removed it, turn key to IGN and carefully look for leaks around any fuel pipes you undid.
you can do this youself if you have suitable tools (and petrol containers/funnel/etc), a hydraulic jack and stands (so it's safe to crawl under car) - the ma61 tank is easy to remove (compared to RA40) so MA70 should be about the same? (assuming you have a MA70?)
safety note: have a fire extinguisher and/or hose handy.

Could be a fuel pump ECU problem. To bypass it, use a paperclip in the diagnostics port under the bonnet (next to the oil dipstick). Join FP and B+ to force the fuel pump into "ON" mode, bypassing the ECU. Turn the car to ON and you should hear the pump working (hopefully). Try starting the car and going for a drive similar to when the problem first occurred and see if it still happens.
If the problem goes away, I'd say a new fuel pump ECU is required. Tends to be a problem on aging Soarers with the 1J.
