TruTrac LSD in my AE86

after smashing the shit out of the pinion gear and crown wheel, i had a diff guy check out the rest of the diff, and put my new crownwheel/pinion gear in, lap it, barings, tighten etc..there are somethings i just don't pull apart, and diffs are in that catagory..when i pulled it out, i was looking all around the inside for some sort of brand or logo etc, nothing..when i took it to him (northside transmissions at sandgate) he nearly had a heart attack! he told me that it's a TruTrac LSD, the best in the world etc..and he also said that for the sprinters there rare as rocking horse shit..i have always said that my LSD was awsome..but i had no idea what it was/to compare it to..
how good it is compared to say a TRD 2 way, or cusco etc, those sorta things..he said its really good for drift because it basicly just locks up when is gets to a certain 'Load'
the TruTrac, what sort of function does it have when decelerating, like really hard into corners or somthing, from what he said it acts like an open centre?? i dunno!

If the LSD acts like a open center when decelerating, then its a 1-way. If it tends to lock up when both decelerating, and accelerating, then its a 2-way. Most brands are avaliable as either 1, 2, or 1.5-way.
I assume the TruTrac is a clutch plate LSD similar in design to the TRD and Cusco and KAAZ ones, but they do seam to cost alot more so maybe they are made better.
Occationaly, I have the chance to buy a new or second hand TruTrac LSD for AE86 from Japan, but they do cost a bit. I got a secondhand TRD one for myself. It works well, but does clunk around a bit at low speeds cornering.
If the cone springs have enough pre-load, even a 1-way LSD should give a little LSD action when decelerating, but not sure how much it would make a difference.

this guy built the diffs that Geoff Holden (i think that was his name!) used in his AE86 circut car, he specialises in toyota LSD's, he did say that the TruTrac diffs are more commonly found in G and F series diff, he has come across a few T series TruTrac's..

TrueTrac make centres for dozens of diffs... why do you assume they don't make them for T series diffs? Even if they don't make them now it's quite likely they did at some point.
A TrueTrac is a helical type LSD, sometimes called a TorSen (or Torque Sensing) diff. It's a torque multiplying unit, which means it locks up in proportion to the amount of torque being applied to the unit, so the more you sink the boot the more LSD effect you get - and conversely, when you're trundling around town it acts just like a normal open centre. That's why they're so damn good! The only downside is when you lift a wheel off the ground you get zero LSD effect - torque multiplication is of little use when you start with a torque of zero! The recommended fix in this situation is to apply the brakes, thus loading up the diff and allowing the torque multiplication to start working.

so what your saying Norbie is that when my car is on the hoist, out of gear, if i hand turn one wheel the other 'should' spin the other way, like an open centre..cos mine spins both wheels in the air..

If it is a Trutrac, I'd be interested to know a little more about it - spline count, crownwheel bolt number, any part number (is if it would be that easy - my Trutrac has no engraved or cast part number on it either)?
As it stands, I can't find a part number for any Trutrac to suit a T series diff anywhere, but as Norbie said - thats not to say they haven't previously been made, though I'm sure given the size, they'd only be two post, not three?

you are referring to the Bob Holden race AE86's which i own (2 of). They both had/have TRD diffs. At the time, there was no alternative, whats more, both have the lite-ace type axles with the huge spline so no standard T diff centre fits them. who was this in brisbane you are referring to????
