Well both the input shaft, and the clutch plate have 21 splines, but the clutch is around 30mm diameter, and the input shaft is around 22mm.

ALL W40/W50/W55/W57/W58 boxes have the same spline.
I've used the same clutch plate on a W40 and W50.
Then used that input shaft as a clutch aligning tool to the clutch which is now in my W57.
30mm sounds about right, but its not with me to check.
Tell me what box you have.
Sounds like it could be the wrong one.
But its just as likely that the clutch is wrong.

Take it back
Swap it for an RA60 box.

matt- this will help identify gearboxes:
http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/loats/technical/ma61 /gearboxes.html
(thanks to ed_ma61)
at first glance of your pic, the lack of centre plate (be it alloy as found in my/wilbo's/etc supra gearboxes; or steel) says not W5x
maybe shove the dollar coin up the wreckers butt?
damn... so like me you had a mostly fruitless day wasted at wrecking yards?
cheers, charles.

Hehe, I didn't spend too long at the wreckers, just the phone call before hand, and came to pick it up. Perhaps not being there long was part of the problem, I only had a cursory look at the box (yep, its alloy, out of an RA60 you say? great) and threw it in the car.
Once it was home, I noticed alot of things wrong with it. Not a happy chappy. Just glad it was the local wreckers, not wacol or oxley or something.
I'll be going on a scavenge tomorrow, most likely, anything you'd like me to look for at Ipswich ABC?

i'm still looking for plugs for the 4agze injectors... but there's nothing at ABC (tried both today)
anyone know what uses same plugs as them?
matt: do you have the link to pics of different kinds of toyota injector plugs?
(sorry for the flagrant post hijack)
cheers, charles.
