yeah you gotta keep your power away from your speaker cables,

where's your amp power wire? (biggest offender)

I would be checking my earths

you can install those "isolator" thingys, but I have never had a problem if the install job is properly earthed and powered

yeah, basically dude you gotta remember that your earth needs to be the SAME gauge as your power. It has to move the same amount of current.

Try a better chassis bolt or something?? I like seatbelt or seat ones.. they work well.

RCA's down the drivers side and power down the passenger side.

If your wires are not like this , you will get noise. You said they are on the left and right , but fail to provide a perspective to view the vehcile and assertain what sides left and right are.

good stuff, well dude I think it might be time for "neverfail" testing technique

get some speaker cable and run it along the outside of your car to the speakers and head deck and see if that eliminates the problem, then you will know for sure if it is a power cable problem or a power line affecting your speaker cable.

sounds like you know your stuff

these are just my ideas too from my experience... so there is probably better ones out there

yeah this problem usually only occurs with an amp, but a badly wired head deck can do it.. an amp just makes it big

well, so we think that there is some sus cabling

fine, just SKIP everything and run power directly to your amp, or music straight from your head deck into the amp out side of the car.

ie just get some longer wires you might have lying around and see what happens. You only need one speaker going to test so you won't need lots of wire

because if the problem is power/speaker cable conflict this will take that out of the picture and you will be much closer to what the problem actually is (if it isn't this)

edit: this is just to test of course.. not to drive around Wink

It may not be alternator whine... it could be the injector pulse from the ECU doing it. Buy some higher quality RCA's or wrap some al foil around the existing ones to shield them a bit more.

Bad earth would not be a likely cause either as a bad earth will just make the amp distort at lower levels than it really should.

ok wellll i checked the earth and it looked fine but i moved it anyway 2 1 of the seatbelt bolts i cleand the tread up on it. i disconected the power wire and ran a new wire from the battery2 the amp and the whine still came thru.....just got bak from dwn town talkn 2 a guy at a car audio shop he seemed 2 think it was either my rcas (tried 2sell me a $100 pair of rcas!) or that a little diode in the alternatior had packed a sad and that was causing the sound....i then head 2 the auto electricion we disconned the alternator and no noise so its defianatily that he seemd 2 think maybe it was a poor earth in the dash 4 the head unit...or mybe my amp was crappy and didnt have the apporpiate noise filters....neway he said rebuilding the alterantor was gna accoplish nothing more than taking my $ away from me..... Confused

im kinda confused now any ideas any1?

any help would b great! Smile

Yes swap them over.

RCA's down drivers side
Power down passenger side.

how does that make any difference to what side of the car they run as long as they are apart.

what guage power wire do you have coming from the battery to the amp? do you have the equivelent size wires from the negative post on the battery to earth?
ever thought of putting a noise suppressor on the alternator?

the difference between positive and negative post wire sizes can make a difference. if you have 8 guage going to the amp, normaly 4ish guage running the starter you should have at least the same as the 4 + 8 guage running from the negative to the chassis.

when you say you cleaned the thread of your earth point, its best to get some sandpaper and sand the paint away so your earth lead gets a real conection to the chassis.

noise suppressors rare? i sell them at work, the ones that look like a condensor. not rare at all.

maybe some reading in here might help

No idea , I'm no audio engineer but I was told to always do it that way , and so far I have never experienced interference , even with cheapo RCA's , dodgy earth pionts ect ect Confused

when i was doing it as a job i always ran the power cable down whatever side the battery was on (whether it be left or right side of the car), as long as the rca's are run away from it. plenty of times i even ran the rca's down the center of the car too, used cheap ones like you have used as well with no problems. Smile but most the comp guy's want all the flash ones that you hardly ever get to see... Rolling Eyes
but i always upgrade my earths and make sure they all have a good connection to bare metal.

Use shielded RCA leads, good quality plugs, and stick a "ground loop isolator" in between the H/U and amp, or speakers if there is no amp.

Ground Loop Isolators cost $20-30.

hmmm, obviously one of your components is rooted, get a mate with all that gear to come over, and use their amp with your speakers etc to see whats causing the problem...

is it the same sort of whine as when you put a microphone up against a speaker?

Electrical interference...

Check that the headunit is wired in correctly (Not just good joins, but the power wires are correct, and the earth is correct also)
Then check out the amp... For a quick bit of fun, remove the remote turn on, and give it constant 12+ve, the amp SHOULD come on permanently that way... Then try and see if the noise is there...

If you wire the amp in that way, does it stay on when the IGN is turned off? Because if it DOESN'T then the amp is wired in on ign cables and not constant...

I'd also check the cables LEAVING and GOING to the alternator... Make sure they are not frayed at all or rubbing on anything... As a second point, upgrade them to a thicker guage...

Used to be available at Dick Smith Electronics, it seems they like to sell more DVD playery stuff these days not all the electrical stuff, I guess it's where the money is....

Anyway more on topic try Jaycar(www.jaycar.com.au), or maybe Strathfield Car Radios(I doubt it though).

the head unit is all wired in corectly and ive done it properly with the positives constants and negatives. the remote wire is run off the head unit so the amp only turns on when the head unit does...

all the alteranator wires are fine i looked at them and so did a autoelectricion he said dat the alternator is prefect

Are the driving lights run off a relay? they should be, if they aren't the switch won't handle the current and cuase the problem you describe. Relays are your friend, any current drawing device should have one and source it's power from the battery/alternator lead.

Check your other accesories too!

oh yeah and Bad Earth. Is there any current drain on the battery with the ignition turned off?

Been told old coils can cause interfernce dont know how much or how true it is? fo $50 or so maybe its worth gettin a brand new coil, if u already have a new coil rip the sistem out take to a stereo joint with a fitting warrenty if they fit it and its fine put it down to human error if it still makes the noise get them to source the cause under warrenty, its a small price to pay for your own sanity but it all depends, How anoying is this noise?
