Regassing Tailgate Struts Thu, 30 December 2004 22:21 Go to next message
Anyone know a place that does this?
Mine are shot & won't hold the tailgate open anymore.

I don't want to buy new struts as I imagine the price would be exorbitant for an import through Toyota, & I don't want to keep using the broom stick that I currently have to.

For the ST185 new struts were worth about $120 a side and a regass was worth about $50.

I went the regass but I would probably go the new struts next time, the regassed struts feel overgassed and they don't slide as nicely as they used to.

They might just need some grease too.

Its worse than that. The tailgate won't stay up at all which I think means the gas pressure isn't there anymore.

How heavy is the GT4 hatch?
My tailgate has to open a lot further & probably more weight.
Mine also used to open itself once the tailgate was only about 1/4 open when I bought the car.

where did you have your's done?

The GT4 gate is f'ken heavy I can tell you!
Two of us were holding it up while we used our other hand to unbolt the struts and I swear if felt like our arms were going to calapse.

A friend at work gets them done through some guy that Toyota Ryde uses for regassed struts.
If you want them done just give the struts to me and I'll pass them on to him.

I'd recommend getting the proper Toyota struts though... they aren't that expensive (considering Toyota's normal parts pricing structure).
