A process that is used to weld aluminium that would proably work is called TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding. However TIG machines can be quite expensive to buy, im not sure about renting one, it takes some skill to do nice welds though.

cost for a TIG machine is around $4000+.
you can do aluminium with a MIG, but TIG is much much better.

there are a number of people on toymods who do this for a living...

I weld and I have to say TIG is the most difficult of the manual welding processess. Oxy welding experience is good for TIG as you have a torch and filler wire that you have to coordinate. If you can get your hands on a machine, get some scrap and try to join it, good luck. Pipe is also more difficult than flat. I would be getting someone with experience to do the job. It should not cost all that much and it will be alot more expensive if you bodge the job.

TIG is the preferred method for welding alloy, however, it can be done with an Oxy.
I have difficulty using a TIG because I can't see the tungsten tip properly (colour vision issues) so I use an Oxy most of the time.
That and when you accidentally touch the filler rod to the tungsten tip (due to reason mentioned above) you get a mighty big jolt!
