T50 weak 5th gear

Hi
Just wondering if anyone else has has this problem, I have had a search for "T50 Weak" and didn't come up with anything about 5th gear.
Anyway I had a wine in my gearbox in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th gear. Suspected a worn input bearing from the noise. Once pulled apart discovered the bearing was fine but 5th gear was about to let go. The spine in the gear and on the shaft were both flogged out and just holding.
I was wondering if this a common fault with the gearbox
Thanks
Jason

Ive never heard of 5th being a problem, 2nd is usually the weakest point in the T50 as it gets most of the work. 2nd particular doesent like compression braking

I've never had a drama with 5th in the past, then again, i'm rarely flogging the car at those speeds anyway. Third gear has always been my problem once you put a decent amount of torque through it.

Spine and gear on counter shaft were worn, output shaft was fine. The noise developed in the last 12 months and the car hasn't been driven hard in that time. All other gears were fine.
As to the 5th gear thickness can't remember being a huge difference in thickness between the gears.

I had my t50 rebuilt about 12mths ago and the 3rd gear was worn to all hell, i dont see how, it only had a 4ac infront of it.
The dude that did the rebuild says normally when a gear is about to let go/break you can usually see a worn pattern on the other surrounding gears, but my 4th and 2nd were fine, no obvious signs of wear.
Doesnt make sense really does it.
Cheers

HAs your car got a towbar if so would suspect someone has been towing in 5th which normal;ly causes the wear you a describing.
(overdrive shouldn't be use when towing according to owners manual)

Yeah I had this problem with my old RA28. The spline on the 5th gear only covers about half the gear width. A bit of a design fault in my opinion but who knows why they did it that way. I guess thats why they didn't use this box in the GT celicas.
It will cost you a lot more to repair it than it will to buy another one.
Driving around in 5th at 60km/h is the best way to kill it too. Use 5th on the freeways where it needs higher gearing. Thats why it's there.
