Hi I have a Guttless AE82 Corrolla with the 4AC Engine. The was free and is in good nick. Perfect interior and a better than most exterior. I have done a full service replaced the coil, fuel pump, thermostat, pressure plate clutch plate thrust bearing and all the usualls (sprark plugs leads dizzy cap oil filter air filter e.c.t...) i Had a berkly free flow muffler fitted and know i am faced with a problem, the car sounds mean but is really guttless. I have considerd extrcators and maybe a carby but i dont really know whats availiable if anything. I like this car, it has sentimental value, i know its not suposed to be a speed machine and i should sell up and upgrade to better engine that can be tuned easier but i really want to keep this one.
What can i do to modify this engine is there anything at all??

Well short of going 4age, Get the head shaved, and ported. Get a webber, some extractors, exhaust...etc
..but theres only so much blood you can suck out of an already dry rock.

Years ago, mine used to go a fair bit better with an Impco 125 LPG carb and the bottom half off of an old Mazda (I think!) carb as a throttle.

alright I will have some seriously weird looks in my direction now but I had an unexpectedly high power gain from fitting a gas research carby on my 4ac, it was for economy reasons only but it sure was a good bonus with the power.

I don't think the term beef and 4ac are in anyway applicable.

I looked into beefing up a 4AC, I have a 290 degree cam in mine and it made almost no difference. Here are some points / problems
1. The 4AC has a well shaped cam, much better shape then a 4AG but this means that upgrading the cam doesnt do to much.
2. For a cam to work etc you need a good exhaust system as the overlap of the cam relies on good exhaust flow. The 4AC exhaust manifold is an abortion.
3. The intake manifold is interesting but limited. Dual carbs would be good or efi (CA18 fuel rail is the right dimentions.
4. Port the crap out of it lol
You should be able to get 120-140hp with the right work, or you could get that out of the box from a 4AG.

simple cheap power = remove exhaust butterfly, put heatshield between intake manifold and exhaust chamber box to stop fuel bieng heated on entry. Remove all sacrificail drag where possible, port match the intake and exhaust, use Weber DGV 36/36 alfa carb and get it tuned to the engine by someone who knows what they are doing!!.
Remove EGR pipeing etc and piss off all vacume except to dizzy replace EGR line with an appropriate bolt at the intake manifold ( not cheap i recall a single bolt to match costing more than $20 at the time)
if your lucky with those mods you might get something like this....
52.6RWKW of raw 4AC POWAH!!

The exhaust buterfly your talkin about was jammed shut when i got the car, the spring that open and closess it was rusted out. every time i whent up the slightest hill i would get back pressure through the carby so i ripped the carby off to check it and changethe blown gaskets and noticed the butterfly was jammed. i couldnt just replace the spring and couldnt be stuffed changing the manifold so i jammed it wide open and tagged it with a mig on the outside of the manifold to keep it open, it ran better of course when u think about it when it was jammed shut all my exhaust was trying to escape out of a 5mm gap. my ignition module whent the other day and after being told by my mate at auto one a replacement was $45. at trade price, (This is just after christmas) i did some reaserch, the ignition module out of a 4AC is the same as VL and VK commodore EFI engines, i whent to All Holden Wreckers where my mate works got one for free swapped it over and the car runs better than before, still a bit guttless, but with the way shockies are i'de kill myself with any reall power, their that bad its like a boat, courners can be very skeary. I jumped started a mates car the other day with jumper leads and his girl friend closed the bonet, it didnt close properly and i was un aware, once i hit 70k's it flipped open, the windscreen is fine but the bonnet is stuffed. I saw ppl in one of the other post talking about how fast they can take there 4AC's, mine makes 160Kmph in 5th and 5500rpm but handles like a fat women on a water bed, i've got to replace those shockies.

Ignition module?? Mine just has point running to a coil
I jammed (wire) the second throught valve open on my carby, more torque down low.
Takes a while to get to 160, but i can sit on it all day long (have done it for 30mins, turned around and 30mins back)
Have had it to 170 tops. Its in a panelvan. My cut down falcon springs feel good long as i dont get airborn.

6000 rpm in 5th flat out ( on a private road of course ) speedo was reading between 175-180 didnt really look at the spedo was concentrating on keeping the car going in a straight line but car felt fine, its had HD springs and reasonably good shocks had pirelli p6000 tyres too. took about 5 minutes to get there tho lol gets to 140 reasonably quck but from there its a fricken dog. now the 100kw 4ag gets to 160 with not problems at all!
go the 4ac,
but yeh the mods u need to get any decent power have been mentioned above.
tho there really is no subsitute for a 'GE
