3SFE gear box with 3SGTE engine!!!

i got this celica 86 with 3SFE engine and i want to change the engine to 3SGTE and i may be modify it later... do you think i still can keep the old gear box or it's not enough for the 3SGTE.

i had a mate who did the same thing, it lasted a little while but i would plan on changing it ASAP.

well i have heard of ppl using the v6 camry box with good results. i used an mr2 turbo box for mine but that ended up being fairly expensive.

My car has the 3sfe g/box in it. it works fine, but its not the best suited for taking the torque from the 3SGTE. go for an mr2 lsd box. or you can modify a gt4 box to work. you can also use a SX celica box, camry v6, etc..
there's a few options, just do some research on it

thx for all advises, in this case do you think if i still put 3sfe gear box with the 3sgte engine but leave the engine standard, how long do you guy think it will last???

That would totaly depend on your driving style...
example: i have a 3S-FE, pretty stock except for exhaust, and I'm onto my second gearbox already... (although cheap(er), they aint Tonka Tuff)

U can lock-out the rear output shaft on the 3sGTe box, but I think it's only intended as a temporary thing for Dyno testing and stuff. I've read about a few people in the U.S. using the V6 Camry box too, there's something different in the clutch though (from memory).

Ive got a V6 box running with a 3sgte in my camry. V6 box seems very strong, has survived many burnouts, no LSD though.
Cost me $330 second hand from wreckers about 6 months ago and sincros etc all work well.
Selector cable bracket is different to the 4 cly camry/(celica probably) box need to weld a bit of metal in to make it work, not hard.
I am using a GT4 clutch and pressure plate with the V6 camry box, they are identical to the V6 camry clutch except the force on the GT4 pressure plate is higher. (just need a slightly stronger left leg)
Even the castings on the GT4 box are identical to the V6 camry box, so if you want a strong box that is allready 2WD...
The 4 cly clutch plate is definately smaller, i would go with the bigger clutch if you plan on a 3sgte

well i've got the 3sfe box and my car's got full exhaust,intake and 10psi. i've had the g/box in for 6mths (2nd hand low kms import g/box)and it's OK... 2nd gear syncro crunches at high revs, but it still goes in gear everytime. *touch wood*
So it all depends on your driving style and the current condition of your g/box.
As for the clutch, i had a custom exedy one made. has the spline of the s53 and the disc size is the same as the gt4/mr2's pressure plate.
Everyone does it differently, money and parts availability are usually the deciding factor.

A good mate of mine in Russia has stuffed in an ST215 Caldina 3S-GTE engine into his 3-door RAV4. However he kept the 3S-FE gearbox taking a bit of a risk. To this day it's worked out ok for him, and it's been in there for several months now. But this might be the RAV4 gearbox being designed for an AWD setup and 'maybe' slightly stronger than it's 2WD 3S-FE equivalent.
Me I have the ST205 gearbox in mine (designed for rallies so it's damn near unbreakable) with an ST185 GrpA rear LSD. Considered doing a drivetrain swap?
