Just wondering if genuine toyota sump goo can be used on gearbox sandwhich plates?
It seems to be identical sealent for seperate part listings, with a new part number sticker over the top.
Yet toyota assures me its different?
I understand its a different part number but i feel its an identical product in the tube!

Good times.
Didn't feel like being extorted for another genuine tube of goo.

Hi BlackSupra, you will probably find the goo is an RTV type Silicon product.
In general, most automotive workshops will use a similar goop, and it will do both jobs.
Your primary concern, is to ensure that the surfaces are FREE of dirt and oil, before you apply the sealant.
Plumbers "Acetone Primer Fluid", thinners, or prepwash, are ideal for cleaning parts prior to assembly. A handy aerosol product is carby-throttle body cleaner, does a really good job.
regards Chuck.

Thanks Chuck, yup both surfaces are sparkling clean, 2 stroke does a good job as well, not the best on the hands though. I used degreaser and elbow grease this time, worked fine.

i wouldn't.
the sump/pan is a very bendable, when torqued, piece of sheetmetal that will have large gaps to fill, and the gearbox is a very stiff & well machined piece of alum., that theoretically won't have any gap at all to fill.
that silicone/rtv stuff is great for gaps, but doesn't like close tolerance stuff.
i think, on machined parts, it does all its sealing on the inside & outside edges where the goop has been squeezed out, and nothing between the surfaces.

I like to use Loctite 518 on most stuff. Works well on aircraft so it works well on my engines too.
