Personally I would replace the boot myself and then go get a wheel alignment as most of the commercial tyre and alignment places are pretty clueless when it comes to anything more than mr and mrs bogans ford or commodore.
e.g. The local wheel alignment joint acted like I was stupid when I argued that the toe could be altered on the rear of my ST185 when they said it couldn't.

And yes on most cars you could/do unthread the steering arm to change the boot... just take note of where it is screwed up to so you can roughly realign the wheels before going to the wheel alignment joint.

Thanks for the advice Toobs. I have tried to undo the lock nut on the tie rod before but haven't succeeded. Do you usually use an adjustable to hold the tie rod and the open end of a metric spanner to undo the lock nut?
Cheers!

I hate adjustable spanners / shifters... but you could use one if necessary.

Is that basically what you use though, just normal sized spanners. Maybe I need to get some muscle

I used adjustables, and maybe some vice grips.
A hammer is the key though, break that son-of-a-bitch.
You can get a tool to spread the boot over the tie rod end, but if you need to get an alignment anyway, just take them off like you proposed.

Thanks guys - I'll give it a go when I get a chance
I won't let a tyre/wheeel alignment place do it...

It's OK to let an alignment place do it... Just go to one of the few that has a rough idea what they're doing...
