SW20 Coolant Burping Sun, 02 January 2005 12:22 Go to next message
I think i have a problem with air in my coolant. I tried following the BGB to burp it, but when i put radiator cap on to first click and try to start engine for 3mins, coolant just keeps coming out of radiator cap.
Do i have a blockage, leak, or is my thermostat gone,..
My idle is usually at 1500-1700rpm(sometimes drops to 1000rpm for no reason). My temperature gauge shows just under half all the time.

What options do i have in taking to a mechanic or radiator place and how much they usually charge.

I want to take my car to BD4s for a tune up but this problem has been stopping me for quiet a while.

sounds like your themostat is on the blink...

try just removing it 1st and put it all back together. if it stops doing it then go buy a new one.

i always drain and refill my coolant with the car reversed up on ramps. never had to 'burp' it.
with air in the coolant the temp guage would still read normal, but can cause a bouncing idle.

Idling at 1500-1700? That's a little high isn't it? When I cold start it it's at 1500 for like 2 minutes then drops to 900 where it stays all the time.

On a previous car(TA23) I paid $350 for a full flush of the radiator, new pipes and a new thermostat. SW20's have slightly more complicated cooling systems so I'm not sure what it would cost exactly...$300-400 would be a good guess.

try getting a new radiator cap so start with. its the cheapest option, then just go from there..

the AW11's have quite a specific coolant filling technique. there are 3 air bleed points. 4 if you include the radiator cap. check in your manual and read up on the fill technique, drain and refill from check from there. also probaly worth doing would be to replace the thermostat as suggested earlier. it isnt an expensive part and becomes cheap insurance against failure and overheating.

Wow, 2 replies in less than 10mins.

Yes i have followed the manual technique(AKA the BGB) with the bleed hoses etc., and reached the pont i am at now.

I am going to drain my coolant, check my thermostat(replace if necessary) and refill while on ramps. Hopefully this will fix my problem.

Glad to hear that air in the coolant can cause idle bouncing as this is what i thought. Definitely idling to high, it's meant to idle at 800rpm once warmed up.

If it's going to cost me >$300 to get it checked out i'd rather do it myself.

Is there a way to test the radiator cap, if all else fails i'll get another. Thanks guys i'll let you know how i go.

Has anyone got a picture of the Engine drain plug, i can't remember what/where it looks like.

I had my car up on ramps and drained the coolant from the radiator drain plug, but i'm not convinced i have drained it all.Would i have drained it all, as the lowest point was the radiator drain plug by far?

I found the engine drain plug and went through draining it all over again.
Replaced an o ring on the radiator bleeder (as every time i turned it 3 turns per the BGB it would start to leak), this made no difference, still leaks.
Tried to get the thermostat out but could only get to one bolt, so was unable to.
Still won't take in enough coolant, idles high, and i can always hear it bubbling after a drive.
Now when i try to burp it, coolant keeps coming out of radiator bleed hose, with no coolant in the heater bleeder, which is a new occurence.

If only i could cancel out the thermostat, just can't get to the 2nd bolt.

I am so annoyed, i want to get someone else to have a look at it, can anyone suggest someone in Sydney that knows about SW20 MR2 specific coolant technique? I used to love driving it, but now i've pulled my car off the road so i don't do any damage.

Go for a drive and get the car to operating temp then stop somewhere (don't turn off the car) and listen to the radiator and see if you can hear it bubbling... if you can only hear the bubbling once you stop the engine just fill your overflow bottle with straight coolant and go for a short drive... stop the car and let it cool down.
When your cooling system cools down a vacuum will be created which sucks the coolant back into the system.
This will, after a couple of times, fill your cooling system again.
Just watch your temp gauge and make sure the car doesn't overheat and preferably don't drive too hard until you've got all the bubbles out.

Also remember to drive around with the heater on a bit as you can get air stuck in your heater box and if you don't run the heater it won't work its way out.
