Jeff's RA28 and TA23 projects Mon, 03 January 2005 06:47 Go to next message
G'day toymodders,
I just thought id add my porject car to the list.
I am 15 from Tamworth NSW.

My brother bought the car for $1300 and soon lost interest and handed it down to me.

Little work done to the engine.
-Mild cam grind by crow cams.
-valves reseated,
-head surface grind.
-fully reco'd head.
-Bigger exhaust, extractors etc.

I plan to make the car into a respectable street machine and plan to upgrade to an 18rg engine when i have experienced a bit more driving. no point in having any more power whilst on my L plates.
I have a bit knowledge on mechanics and am doing majority of the work myself.
Currently doing a rebuild on the engine and preparing the shell for a respray.
Opinions, critisizm, and suggestions are welcome.

Hi im 16 and I too will be doing up a RA28 soon. Personally I think that a 18rg is a good option for a replacement motor as thats what im going to put in mine. Just out of curiousity what colour are you going to paint it.

I will most likely be painting it a Metallic silver, similar to the original colour.

Excellent attitude to have towards your first car, and it looks to be a great start bodywise too. Be careful though, the RA28 I bought as a daily driver/everyday car, wound up being driven rarely and loved greatly for motorsport purposes over the 12/13 years before I sold her last year.

Pics of mine are here:

Are some variants of the 18RG Carby??? I just cant work EFI if i try so i wouldnt mind steering clear of running surge tanks and stuff like that.

Is it possible to just have an 18RG running on solex carbs??? but t hen what do i do for fuel and ignition if they are normally EFI???

thanx for the positive feedbck guys.

just recently my father and i bought 2 76 TA23's, one being a complete rust bucket but it came with the parts for 2 ta23s. and another that runs well with 205/60/13 bridgestones and after i bought it found out it has rear and front anti sway bars!! this is going to be turned into my daily driver while i am doing up my 28, i get my L's in 2 months.
Funny enough the yellow is in better contion then my 28, but it just isnt the same Crying or Very Sad i love 28s Crying or Very Sad

Pics of the daily driver.

u can probly see the dent in the bonnet, wen we bought it came with a big dent in the bumber and the front was a bit monged, thankfully the other 23 had ll the parts needed to replace the damged bits. I m not going to worry bout getting the bonnet fixed s this is only my dd nd not going to be the show car.

The dial colours can be easy or difficult depending on the results you want. I have played with a few different methodsand currently have clear/tinted faces so they are kinda back lit. I am still not happy with them yet but at least I can see them at night. The next evolution will be silver with clear numbers hmmm sexy.

Oh and printing the numbers on plain copy paper and putting that in front of the gauge faces works but looks a bit ordinary in my opinion.

yer i downloaded a template for white backround speedo's but i didnt really like the idea of having ordinary paper in my speedo(i am a bit of a fussy bugger or perfectionest some people call me) . Wen playing around with different backrounds wats the risk of sending ur speedo out of calibration?
oh and i like the sound of ur silver backround with clear numnbers. Do u fabricate these backrounds urself?

It may have been the template that I made, I can't remember who I gave it to to hoast.

Unless your really dodgy and cut a slit in the paper to slide over the needle, you have to remove the needle to change the face. This will affect the calibration but if you are careful to note where the needle sits before you take it off and put it back in teh same place, then you will get it pretty darn close. When you look at in the big scheme of things, we are all running non standard tyre sizes and have speedo's calibrated to +/-5% at best from the factory. Add to this that regardless of what your speedo said if the radar says you were over the limit, then you have to pay the fine.

Yep the new ones will be vinyl stickers on tinted perspex backings. Should look great when they are done.

Re: RA28/TA23 project, updated Mon, 11 April 2005 09:59 Go to previous message
i had a scraping noise coming from my gearbox that was there since i bought it. When i put my foot on the clutch it goes and it speeds up as the engine revs higher. So removed the gearbox to see if it was the thrust bearing scraping on the arm. which it wasnt. so i hooked the electirc drill up to the gear shaft and let her rip, turns out there scraping sound is coming from the internals of the G-box!!! OH f*ck Mad Mad

So i loaded up the good ol patrol with tools etc backed it down to my other ta23 and begun to pull the engine out. she was out no worries, then removed the gearbox from the motor. cleaned her up, put her into the daily, tuned her up(i also rebuilt the carby) and then went for a drive.

"1st gear" "2nd gear" "neutral" "wtf?" "meh 3rd will do" "driving up hill tries to change to 2nd" "crunch crunch crunch" And at that moment i just realised i spent the most of saturday wasting my dads time, Trent(trent-ke30) time and my own time.
The g box is f*cked, it wont change down into second and when changing from 1st to second it will jump into neutral after a few seconds. The syncro is screwed i think.
