We bought the car half done. The engine was in but it needed a lot of work. Both the sr and 1g engines have their advantages. Half the time i'm embarrassed to say it's got a sr lol!
$2500 to $3000 for a motor? is that JUST the motor or the whole conversion?
remember there's a lot more to it. ie diff, brakes, engineers certificate, computer, suspension, rims etc etc.

$4000 for a conversion? you'd probably need more than that. a diff conversion would be 1.5 to 2 grand

There's not much competition mate, if you want more than the 18RG and varients, the 1ggte is it. it fits quite well, is an easy conversion, is cheap as and goes hard. Expect to pay $4-5K if you do it all yourself and cut some corners (I.E. stock diff) but you'll be happy with it.
there must be at least 30 people on these forums that have done it into a RA23 or an RA28.
Tim.

i am currently in the mmiddle of fitting a 1ggte into my ra28 which has the same front as the ra23, its not that hard if you have a rough idea what your doing but 4 grand would be cutting it pretty close, you can get a half cut from EKW in victoria they always get them in and they do deliver the half cut for only $100. a half cut is about 2500 or they have just the motor for 2000.
if you have any Qs just ask

$1750, thats a good price
I can vouch for the 1g's in the 23/28's. As mentioned you won't regret a second of it.

Spend a lot of time researching the conversion on this site. then start ripping out the old boat anchor. My advice is be very carefull on your choice of people to wire it up. If done well it will be a joy to drive. If done badly you will regularly curse it. Ask others for their advice on who they recommend.
If you wanted to have a look at one, come along to one of the club meetings and say g'day. I am more than happy for you to have a look through mine.

I've been doing my conversion for a while now (1ggte in RA23)...
My advice is to get someone else familiar with the wiring (eg. Grant, Sixworks)to sort the wiring looms from 1ggte and Celica.
Unless you are really comfortable with auto electics and wiring diagrams. I did it myself, having a background in computer electronics and motorbike electrics. However, it was a nightmare and took me easily 2 months to get the engine running properly.
So definately worth the cash to pay someone, unless you really know what your doing.
See if you can get the Circuit Opening Relay from SSS if you don't have it. It's not that critical though as you can get away with bridging a few "off the shelf" relays to do the same job.
Also budget for lots of little bits and pieces, eg. wiring, heatshrink, terminals, fuses, nuts, bolts, brackets, etc. All that stuff tends to add up after a while. And there's also cash for integrating/confiuguring all the guages, and a few other things.
This website is full of info, with most problems and issues relating this conversion already covered many times before.
