81 Hilux conversion Mon, 03 January 2005 11:52 Go to next message
i inherited a crashed 81 hilux of my mate.
so i fixed it, bought an 83, cut the front end off and welded it on all pretty ok in the body area now the mechanicals..
has an 18RC in it, after tryingt o make it go its given up and siezed.
so whats a good replacent engiene, wreckor wants 470 bucks for a stocker unrecod 18RC, yeah an engiene thats 20+ years old, no thanks, so what else can i easy put in, i tried looking for an 18RGxx but didnt find enything other than a 18RGUE with no loom or ECU.
so will a 22R slot in, are they easy to find in australia?
the lux also has a 5spd tranny in it, god knows how it got there, maybe its a W50 from a celica?
thanks

22rs are a great motor and will bolt straight in. Search for one out of either a hilux (rn45 or something???) or out of a 1985 2.4L RA65 celica....these have great torque on offer....

Or you could do what my cousin did - a 3.0L dyna motor fits in nicely...and i can certainly voch they have a lot of low down balls in a hilux....

just beware of some 22r engines

one in my hilux had to be driven at full throttle most of the time and it only had 120 000 kms on it

now with the lexus v8 i get 30 kms less on one tank of fuel than i did with the 22r but i get 3 times the power

for ultimate reliability look no further than the 1uz-fe (lexus 4.0L quad cam all-alloy V8).

otherwise a 1g-gte is a damn reliable, cheap and yet POWERFUL option for you!!

SSS automotive sell them for $750 with loom, ecu and afm! Add a W58 supra gearbox (Which they are supposed to have) for around $600 and you have some bolt in turbo BALLS!

"knackers" on these forums built a hilux with one.

if only u were closer because i could have sold you a 18r-c cheap in reasonable condition.

what are u plannin for this car?? if it is only desired as a shitter car then get a shitter engine (ie. 18rc). if u are serious about makin power etc., by all means a 1ggte/1ggze or 1uzfe seems like the go.

dont forget if you get a 22RE out of a celica - they are EFI, so youd need the ECu and loom...

Maybe a 21rc out of an RA60 celica? 2.2L carby...

its been set up for a minitruck. so basically an engiene that goes and makes it up hills will be fine.
im not fussed about power.
so yeah just want an engiene that wont break down on me all the time
wasnt the 22r offered as 22r (carby) and 22re (EFI) variants?
if its to much muking about ill just pick up another 18rc and stick it in there, maybe go for a commodore v6 conversion or something later but the conversion kit alone is 1000 bucks.
