Drum brakes Mon, 03 January 2005 23:49 Go to next message
I tried to get a drum cover off to check the brake shoes on a friends 90 model lancer. There is no screw on the front to undo. I had the handbrake off but I couldn't get the cover off. I tried to pry it a bit with a screwdriver and gave a few hits with a hammer, but no good. Any ideas??

Handbrake off good idea. Don't know about that car, but here is a idea. Use adjusters move shoes in. Often drums have a inside lip.

I'm not exactly familiar with the Lancer but have changed plenty of others. If theres threads in the hubs, you can insert a couple of bolts in them and break the hub free like this. If not then try hitting the hub at a 45 degree angle on the edge or rotating the hub with some something while hitting it. If their badly lipped then its going to be hard. You might be able to undo the adjusters from the backing plate. Good luck mate.

the drum isnt part of the hub assembly is it, like early barinas...
if so, you have to take the split pin and nut off that hold the bearing on, then the entire drum and hub comes off as a single item.
then you have to ensure correct adjustment of nut when replacing so as not to sieze bearings. and use new split pins.
