Looking at getting a '91 mr2 turbo
just wondering what these things are like to get more power out of, it looks a bit hard. intercooler looks like theres not much room for improvement in size. i have searched these forums and a couple ppl have said to go for a wta intercooler set up. so i guess thats an option, get it off a suby or early gt4? what about a waterspray kit + fan for the original I/C whats the flow/cooling efficiency of the standard I/C is it shithouse or is it okish.
with the boost the ecu runs out of maps at 12psi, or so i am led to believe. What is the stock boost on them? can you safely up the boost to 12psi with out upgrading anything else or would it make 2 much heat for the i/c to keep intake temps low. the injectors be able to deal with the added fuel load? fuel pump have enuff grunt to deliver the extra fuel needed ect ect?
Is there anyway to get a decent CAI set up on these things? where do you get those funky Toms Snorkel things from? are they pricey?
Exhaust looks tricky to, what sort of system would be the go? std turbo style 3" from the turbo back
Any other easy power upgrades?
Cheers for any help

OK here is the run down the 89 - 93 mr2 turbo is afm which these ones have the boost cut at 12psi and yes you can run that boost very safley as they std 10psi, you can run 15psi resonably safley if you were to get aftermarket ECU.
power is not hard to get its just depending on what u want from it. If you want lots of power they may cost a bit more then a normal car, i say this because it mid engine and things are harder to keep cooler. but anything can be done just takes money.
i have a mr2 turbo was putting out 271rwkw and soon i will be expecting into the low 300. so its all possible depends on how far you wanna go.
the 94 + (gen 3) runs boost mapps till 18psi, and that will run that safly all day also.
And bd4's undoubtly know there 2's but you will be charged for it. i suggest look around for someone that you know and you know they can do a damn good job.
good luck.

From another mr2 owner heres some advice.you can get replacement intercoolers, greddy make an awesome one that fits into the orginal place but its damn expensive,i've also seen another not sure of the brand think it was arc that has a fan attached to it.
The main problem with these lil sob's is keeping them cool, any car can make power but being mid engined keeping things cool is difficult.
The biggest restriction is the original turbo exhaust, piss that thing off asap and get something decent made up.remove the airbox as well, get the exhaust shop to make up some pipework that leads down into the side vent and put a pod on it.To get more cool air to your pod ou can buy an add-on scoop that attaches to your side vent,it's a carbon fibre piece so it looks cool.Forget those snorkels the dont do shit, purely a cosmetic thing.
Also get a greddy emanage, ive got one in my na mr2 and its awesome, the ecu can remove the afm for you,it has many features and options according to your needs. Also if your getting a bov fitted get a hybrid stlye where some air vents and the rest re-circulates back to the inlet track.
Also ignition breakdown is a problem, its a weak point in the mr2,make sure your leads, plugs, cap and rotor are all a-ok.last thing you want is misfiring while boosting hard.
These are a few quick power getter tips, hope this helps
