i have the chance to get an 18RG with twin carbs in good condition and am just asking anyone who has done this conversion if there are any problems with the install?. i have the Xmember, front suspension, radiator, gearbox+Xmember and tailshaft from a RA23, there is some more stuff i have but i cant remember it all now,
so if I'm missing any parts or if there is any problems in fitting it could someone please let me know.
if i get the engine i will keep track of the conversion to possibly get some photos up and maybe get it put into the tech articles.

I'm pretty sure an RA23 crossmember won't fit in a TA22, not without mods anyway.

ive been told that i will fit with some minor mods like slotting the bolt holes, etc but unless someone can prove me wrong i will try it anyway.
otherwise i can make the new engine mounts and maybe new sump as a know the old 2TC has a forward sump and the 18RC has a rear sump

If it was me I'd look for a different sump to suit your existing crossmember. A 22R from an RA65 would be a good place to start, I'm pretty sure they're front-sump.

You can keep the TA22 one piece tailshaft they are the same length only the yokes differ. I was running a TA22 tailshaft in my RA23. Is you TA22 matt black in colour?

Swap the 18RG sump and oil pump pickup, for a sump and oilpump pickup from an 18R out of a Corona! NO CROSSMEMBER MODS.
I sure as hell wouldn't want to do a wheel alignment on a car with slotted crossmember.
Regards Chuck.

Guys,
The RA23 Xmember will NOT fit in a TA22 !! You need a Modified X Member and no Slotting the holes will not fix it. They are too wide !
There is actually an 18R-G powered TA22 for sale in the for sale section. The xmember for that had to be made ! I think the whole car is about $1200 or something from memory !
Gearbox Xmember will also not fit !
Chassis Rails on a TA22 and xA23 are VERY different !
Other issues will be Transmission Tunnel may need to be massaged.

Ohh Radiator from an RA23 will most likely be too wide and deffinatly not a straight bolt in. Struts will sit higher (raise cars ride height) but will bolt in.
The RA23 and the TA22 are Very different and the majority of front end parts do not interchange convieniently.
The TA22 Auto shaft has the same yoke as the W50 and is the smae length as the RA28 Shaft. The TA22 Auto and TA22 Manual Shafts are diffenent lengths so I would suggest a Shaft from the Manual TA22 will not only have the wrong yoke but be to long !

The tailshaft lenght of the manual TA22 and RA23 are identical in length only the yokes differ, apart from one being two peice. When the centre bearing on my RA23 tailshaft wore out I fiited a TA22 one piece shaft with no problems.

I have done a 18RC engine into a TA22 and the main problem was that the engine mounts for the 18R were about a 200mm forward of the 2t. We butchered the TA22 mounts to fit the 18R but it has been running for 2 years. The tunnel fitted the W50 box and the Ta22 std gearbox mount only needed redrilling to fit. The shaft needed to be extended approximately 25mm. One problem is over heating with the 18r head sitting higher than the radiator because the radiator was pushed between the light frames. The top radiator hose has a major S bend and should have been fixed but cant be bothered since i am changing to 4agze.

Tanman,
I went home and compared the 3 tailshafts I could easily get to (There is crap everywhere at the moment ..... Arrggghhhh Bloody engine conversions !)
But anyway the RA28 Manual, TA22 Auto and TA22 Manual all have the same length tailshaft ! Looks like you were right mate. Frig knows what tailshaft I had labeled as a TA22 Auto shaft last time I measured them ! (Was many years ago !)
Can someone measure the widths between the chassis rail bolt holes for the xmember in a xA23 and a TA22 ? (Side to side and front to back !)

i have the measurements on the RA23 xmember and a couple off my TA22's xmember here they are.
RA23-
width front-750mm
width rear-735mm
width front to rear-115mm
TA22
width front-710mm
width rear-??? cant reach(its still in the car)but its shorter than the front by a few mm
width front to rear-115mm approx
theres quite a large differencein them so i definately wouldnt try to fit the RA23 item to a TA22

The RA23 cross-member definitely wont fit, I tried and it is not worth it.
The RG I had had a sump from a corona, I tried about 3 different types before I got the right one with the sump forward.
The engine mounts forward of the 2t engine, I made up some mounts with 10mm plate which mounts the engine exactly 100mm further forward
hole to cross-member 100mm
X----------------X
hole to engine mount.
the w50 box seem to bolt in fine using the auto cross-member I think and the auto tail shaft.
rest was straight forward.
