Starlet GT turbos Thu, 06 January 2005 16:05 Go to next message
I test drove one of these back in 2000(1990 model i think) on a holiday to Queensland, and have since then got the bug to buy a modified one due to the fact they are virtually unknown in my area(country Victoria).
I was just wondering before I make the decision to sell the WRX or swap it for one with cash, is there any weaknesses I should know about these before I go and buy one,and are parts available quickly if or when needed?
How do they handle power upgrades and what sort of power is needed to get them running in the low/mid 13 sec bracket?
Id like a 1990 model onwards, not the older square shape.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The CV's are the biggest problem. They are expensive and all the GT have different splines on the shafts depending on what day of the week the car was made.
This makes things difficult when getting replacements Confused

There's a fair bit of information there.

I own a 93 with a few mods making 134fwkw.
Mid to low 13's will require around the same power output I have.
As for problems.. torque steer as you'd expect from any turbo fwd. Parts are quite easy to come by, as for the issue with CV's I haven't experience any problems personally and haven't seen that many examples.

If you've been on any starlet forums you would know this is a common problem.

I've been on starlet forums, and it doesn't appear to be all the much more common than with corolla's. Driver abuse would have a lot to answer for i'm guessing.

* Just had a look and most people who have had problems seem to have had split CV boots... no lube on a CV joint isn't a great thing on any car. SO Cool1 is right, when you are looking check to make sure the boot's are still in good condition and there are no obvious leaks.

I thought CV joints were a problem for most fwds that are driven hard?I will probably get the car checked out anyway before purchasing, particularly if I have to fly to QLD to buy one.
Cheers again for the info fellas.

The problem is not the CV's wearing out! The problem is finding the correct replacment part.
