RA28 - RA60 Strut Swap Fri, 07 January 2005 01:21 Go to next message
I need some help with some mods for my RA28 Celica. I have an RA60 Celica that I am planning on using for upgrades. Now I have been told that I can use the RA60 struts in the RA28 Celica. Does anyone know if this information is correct? I am planning on swapping the rear drums, backing plates and brakes off the RA60 (should be a simple swap over process) but not sure what I can do with the front. I also need to know if the springs would then be compatible or if I would have to get new lowered ones for the front to suit the RA60 struts. Any help would be great.

Cheers

Stevie K

RA60 struts will fit, but you will have positive camber. You can correct this with longer lower control arms (2-3cm IIRC), but then you may have issues with wheel clearance.

Very Cool!

I'm currently running 14x7 globe mags but i'll be upping that to 16x6.5 in the next few months. I'll make sure all of the clearances are fine with the right offset. Do you know about the springs and inserts for the strut? are they interchangable?

No, they are not.

If you're doing this just to get the RA60 brakes, there are other ways to go about it while keeping your RA28 struts:

I don't see any advantage in swapping over the rear drums from the RA60 to the RA28, they are both 9 inch drums, unless the ones on your 28 are rusted/warped/too thin or otherwise stuffed.
There are other struts combinations you can consider, if you want better brakes, instead of the RA60, that won't give you positive camber either.

the only reason that i was considering the swap is i have a full RA60 for spares. I also have another RA60 which is getting the interior and a Toyota Tarago that is getting the auto, so i'll have some stuff to play with. The RA28 is an ongoing project that i'm having some fun with, it's getting badged as a GT, has the twincam and i'm thinking about running a bolt on super charger for an extra 4-8 pounds of boost at the flick of a switch (this mod will only cost me a couple of hundred plus piping, so it sounded like fun Very Happy ). If anyone has any susspension mods that are a bit easier, please post a reply. What can i say, i just like to get my hands dirty!
