Why you cant rebuild your AE86 T50 with TE72 internals

Now I assume everyone knows the external differences between AE86 T50s and TE72 T50s (input shaft bearing, bellhousings wont swap, output spline number).
Given I have a AE86 box with teeth off second gear and a really good TE72 box lying around I decided to strip them both and rebuild the AE86 box with the good internals.
There are a few minor internal differences, but nothing seemed insurmountable until I found two things:
- The hole in the TE72 5th gear is smaller than the AE86 output shaft and so wont fit on the right spot. Quick solution, use the AE86 5th gear.
- The hole in the centre of the TE72 second gear is about 1mm larger in diamter than the corresponding place on the AE86 output shaft, meaning it'd slap around.
Since my AE86 2nd gear is rooted the project ended there. Everything else seems possible to switch over.

That's very interesting, unlucky I had the old box.
And yes, I now have the entirity of both boxes sitting around in very neatly labelled sandwich bags, so if anyone could use bits please PM me.

Hmmm, I've got a TE71 2TG box that's in good order, and an AE71 box in my KE70 that's gradually not liking my treatment. I'll be interested to know the possibilities!
