Camping/ Fishing in SEQ Fri, 07 January 2005 13:18 Go to next message
Shane and i have been talkign about camping grounds and dams in SEQ (south east queensland) We have come up with a few here and there...

What i want from the weekend camping:

- FISHING (preferably a dam with a lot of fish Razz)
- ROOMY - so im not camping 2M away from some other stooge
- CAMPING - As close to the waters edge as possible
- LEGAL CAMPFIRE - mmm cooking on open fire...

it doesnt need to be a damn specifically...can be a river or lake or something???

Can anyone reccomend anywhere thats good that they have been to/ know about? someone who can also tell me where exactly the ground is and how far from brissie too Smile

Thanks
Blake

Lake Borumba at Imbil, up near Gympie. But take a canoe and you'll get the best of it.
Around the dam wall is protected so are the lung fish and Mary River Cod. There's a couple of aquariums thats been setup with the different fish in the lake/dam. Like most places, holidays tend to see a few happy camps.
You've got toilets and showers.

If you can live with the ocean instead of the dam, definately go up to Double Island Point, it is soooo awesome up there.

Camp on the dunes, 30-40m walk to the sea/fishing. If u don't go in huge holiday periods your neighbours will likely be at least 200m away. And it is pure camping, we took our own toilet and shower, it was great. But you need a 4x4 to get there, due to beach driving (which is soooo fun!)

I love it there, i reckon u should consider it.

Andrew

Up near Fraser Island. If you have a look on a map, its more or less down and to the right of Rainbow Beach. You can get to Double Island Point from either Rainbow Beach or Noosa. The quickest way is though Rainbow but the easiest would be from Noosa. You WILL need a 4WD from Rainbow AND TAKE NOTICE OF TIDE TIMES CONDITIONS at the local fishing shop or pub or you could wind up swimming with the fish (ask the locals about the stories). Going through Noosa would have to the easiest way. You get across the river by ferry drive past North Shore pub/caravan park and down onto the beach and drive north for something like 1 to 1.5 hour. You've also got tourist spots to stop and smell the flowers. But it would be avisable to check tide times and conditions cause some spots can get alittle narrow at times.
There's also a camping ground up near the point, about a 15minute drive from memory goes by the name "Freshwater".

don't forget to book your camping permits (or get freshwater fishing permit if required) online:
http://www.qld.gov.au/online_services/more_online_ services.html?ref=more

you can also search for sites here:
http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/parks_and_forests/search _parks/forests/

talk to andrew (toyoTA22) as well as he works for forestry mob and will know about some camping grounds in the SE region.

you can find out about water levels at major dams from Sunwater:
http://www.sunwater.com.au but the idiots have removed from the 'water storage information' page the info about the things you can do at dams... all they have is this:
http://www.sunwater.com.au/recreation.htm
and tend to push you off to transport who want you to buy their info rather than give it away:
http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/qt/msq.nsf/index/publica tions

You could also try the DPI 'fishweb' (terrible name):
http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb/
but that's mostly about shit that you can't do.
