7MGE Head Gasket repair- pics provided, advice please... Tue, 11 January 2005 10:26 Go to next message
Hi all,

Unfortunatley i dont have the cash for a full rebuild, so i'm stuck with this motor for now. I've been getting ready to drop the head back on, but have a few questions.

Cleaned the block down with a scraper then sanded it best i could, but still couldn't remove all the marking on the block surface, should this be a problem? (sorry, i know these pics aren't brilliant)

Pistons 1 and 2 didn't clean up as well as the rest beacuse of some wierd deposit that wont be removed with carby cleaner/scrubbing, so i've just left them as is.

This is the condition of my valves after approx 15000kms since the head was last off and rebuilt, done before I got the car. Only a couple of cylinders look like this the rest have a similar surface but are all black, not grey looking. Could this be because of the car overheating or a lean fuel mix (i had the injectors cleaned and 2 were running lean)

Another thing i noticed was this when i got the head back from the shop:

That last one looks pretty bad, should it cause me problems?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Oh and if anyones got a spare cold start injector for a MX83 i wouldn't mind taking it off your hands for the right price, mines stuffed.

Not too bad as far as i can tell. The rest of the head seems good, those pics show the areas of most concern. I agree its pretty grubby but like i said, its all i got at the moment. Hoping it'll hold together for 12 months.

i have pics of my 7m block, and it is worse than yours i think...but dude why arent you replacing the big ends etc while you are at it? When i pulled my motor down, i noticed no6 big end was actually eaten through the bearing and into the copper...ie it was almost ready to grab onto the crank and root my motor....

Make sure you are putting hylomar spray on the HG, and that your block doesnt have and pits in it (like divits...)

Jeez, close call then!, wouldn't mind a pic for comparisons sake if you got em. (can email me: Isaac.Barton@jcu.edu.au). I'm not delving into the block due to financial and time constraints. Theres no bearing noise so I'm hoping everythings ok down there.

As for the hylomar spray, I thought you aren't supposed to put any sealant on OEM head gaskets? Thats what i've been told.

you are correct... but these things have a habit of failing so any help in keeping it intact is useful. Makes it a bit of a pain for the next rebuild but at that point you'll be upgrading to 1JZ? Wink

Nah, he'll have traded that POS long before then! Very Happy

Why go 1jz conversion when you can get an import chaser/cresta/mark II with all the hard work already done...

All i want is a good 12 months (ideally 2 years) out of this car, hope it'll last.

Bit of an update- the heads back on and torqued to 72 ft/lbs.
Working on the timing belt at the moment, its alot harder to install than i imagined. Hope to have it running by the weekend.

I'm new to this level of work on an engine, so it's certainly been an experience sofar!

are those the before or after pics of the block?? i hope they're the "before". the block was originally flat & smooth & clean when put together at the factory.
the head pics are usless to me unless i know where the gasket contacts it. that is where the corrosion may have eaten away & won't seal, otherwise it's fine if it will seal OK. if it is over the fire/sealing ring around the cylinder, it'll have to be welded up & refinished.

Nope, they are the 'after' pics. I scraped the block and (lightly) block sanded the surface to get it smooth and even. The marks you see could not be removed without deeper sanding and i was worried that might upset the straigtness of the block surface so they had to stay.

As for my gasket kit I paid $385.00 (excl. gst) -full VRS set, genuine toyota from a dealer. (part number 0411142033). This includes all the seals you need to do the job, including things like oil pump and crank seals (which i replaced). If you're bothering to take the head off its recommended you use a genuine gasket as a minimum, torqued to 72ft/lbs, unless you want a metal head gasket from HKS and such. My old gasket was a non genuine and you can definatley see the difference in quality.

While i was there i did the timing belt - only $39.55 (bargain), fuel filter -$ 48.00, new head bolts and washers ($140.15) breather hose (from sump to right cam cover)- $56.16!! Shocked (prices excl gst)

I also took my injectors to be cleaned and flowed - i paid $90 but prices vary from $12-$25 per injector. And took my radiator to the shop to have the tanks taken off and the core cleaned - $77 (usual going price is around $90). It was a good thing too as mine was estimated to be 25% blocked, and it was last cleaned march 2004!
