Well I got my car, but the exhaust on it isnt overly flash, when I save up some money I'll get it replaced, but what do I ask the ugy in the shop for without sounding stupid???
ie, super turbo charged 40inch exhaust with flamethrower and a milo tin on the end?
Cheers,
Azza.

do you want noise or performance?
what engine?
for power, ask for "a set of extractors, preferably genie, and a full "inset appropriate exhaust diameter here" mandrel bent exhaust system with a high flow cat and a nice muffler" and then hand over your first born child.
For rice, ask for a nice shiny muffler with a 20" tip be welded on to the end of your exhaust - dont bother with the rest of it, it's just a waste of money.

too much
the 4a-ge is a noisy little slut of an engine anyways. my expertise on this engine is right up there with your average holden driver, so I'll let the 'rolla boys advise you.

i guess really doesnt bother about what engine
if you want a loud sound with a little performance increase
basicly just walk in and say
i want a cat-back canon muffler with 4"tip
usual standard exhaust would be 2.5" so it would be from 2.5" to a 4" tip so it should sound good
mabye they can advise you more

Go to the cupboard, clean out the last bit of milo in the tin, walk out to the garage, grab the pop rivets and shoot a couple of those baby's right through it on too your original exhaust. There you go, that cost you like 2 bucks right? And you'll have the class of a WRX! ENJOY!

I've been quoted $140 for a uni-fit 2.1/4" catalytic convertor, or $190 for a 3" - so DO NOT let anyone bullshit you into buying a $300 "high-flow" cat. There's a Mega-test of resonators and mufflers on Autospeed, which should give you a better idea of what works and what doesn't.
http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&A=0 381&P=1
Don't go the 5" Milo-tin tip unless you really desperatley want it, and love the sight of flashing police lights in your rear view mirror . . - Extractors will do a world of good for the QUALITY of the exhaust note, I'd suggest a 4-2-1 (Tri-Y) set for street use, as they help Torque AND power, as well as sounding SaaaWEEEET ! !

as a side note, exhaust tip should never be larger than exhaust diameter - 3" exhaust = 3" tip

You know the price of cat's doesnt change depending on the size?
All it is with 3" ones as opposed to 2.25" ones is a bigger inlet/outlet.
Its the same dimension everywhere else.

they say 4" cats gain around 40hp so I was thinking a 3" one with no internals should be close to the flow capabilities of the 4".
Just a thought anyway.

Ummm, thats the biggest load of crap I've heard when it comes to exhausts.
Cats drain minimal power.
Maybe 40hp on a 1000hp car, but not on yours.
Maybe 5hp, even less if its in good condition.

dude i've got a 4AGE and the car had a cat back when i bought it with just a standardish muffler. sounds pretty nice, even my dad reckons that it has a nice note to it. i know someone who has a cannon on the back and it is bloody loud. personally i'd just go for a simple muffler still sounds nice but doesn't draw too much attention. I belive mine is a 2" but not too sure.
oh yeah they're also hell cheap compared to cannons

So you're telling me that every catalytic converter on the planet is the same size, with the same surface area on the brick? How is it that a 270kw F6 Typhoon can get away with the same sized cat as a 1.3L, 43kw Ka ?
I don't understand
Could it be that you're mistaken?
(and yes, I've read about dodgey-brothers brand 3" cats, that are 2" items with 3" flared ends welded on)

Well, I don't know what brands they are (couldn't care either), but when I got my exhaust done, it didn't matter whether I used 3" cats, 2.5" cats, or 2.25" cats, as they were all the same price.
They just had the corresponding inlet/outlet on them.

Hmm.. - yeah, dunno.
Definately different sized OEM cats on Holdens - I can assure you! Car makers just put on the smallesst cat they can get away with, coz the catalysing brick costs so much compared with the rest of the car.
$5 less spent on each cat, x 2 cats per car, x 150,000 car for the year = worth using smallest possible cats!

In response to the first post, i have a 4age in my sprinter, with trd copy extractors 4-1, to a 2.25" stainless pipe, no cat. have a hotdog near where the cat would go, and used to have a cannon on the back.
cannon was way too loud, got defected and fitted a shitty muffler to get through RTA. Soon im thinking of getting a motorbike muffler, like some others i know have done. Its small, inconspiquous (sp?) and doesnt sound too bad, cheap too.
Dont go any bigger than 2.25" on the 4age, its not needed, and u may lose backpressure. Also if u get a cannon with a lets say 4" tip it WILL be loud.

I used to work in an exhaust shop, my dad still does, and I can tell you straight out that one of the most important things in an exhaust system, and also one of the most routinely forgotten is backpressure. Basically, it's all to do with the exit velocity of the spent exhaust gasses from the ports. You want to keep that filthy shit from getting back into your combustion chamber.
The faster you can get those gasses to move without restriction, the better - hence extractors - the small pipe diameters keep the gas moving without the restriction. Too small a system and your car can't breathe - too wide, the gasses will slow down, and eventually creep back into the chamber, which means power loss, and usually a gay drumming noise. 2.25-2.5 sounds ok for a 4AGE.
Also keep in mind, a 4AGE doesn't need much help sounding good - bar a rotor (and I personally think a well set up 4AGE, like Bill Sherwoods for example, sounds similar to a 13B) nothing sounds better on the roads.
So basically, concentrate on performance, minimal restriction with enough gas speed to keep the gay out of your cylinders.
Of course, bolt on a turbo, and everything changes, right boys? ;p

Stick several things down your exhaust and try to start it, this really helps the engine.
