icon5.gif  18RG Head-Bolt Torque Settings Mon, 21 October 2002 05:19 Go to next message
Does anyone know what the torque wrench settings are to be used on the head bolts of an 18RG motor?

Specifically an 18R-GEU if there are any differences in the torque settings between the different types of 18RG.

Also would using a copper head gasket require me to tension the bolts to a different setting?

Any help would be appreciated,
Cheers

Clancey

Hey i havent been able to find this out and would really appreciate if anyone knew.. Who rebuilds 18RGs??? because someone must have the specs somewhere..
I need to put the head back on the 18Rgeu soon, What torque settings should the bolts be tensioned to? Also, what should they be re-tensioned to after run-in?
I am using a new genuine toyo head-gasket.

All help greatly appreciated,

Thanks

If you're doing this sort of work it might be a good idea to buy a workshop manual from Toyota (they might still be available). I bought one a few years ago and it's been invaluable. I can look up the head bolt torque settings tonight if no-one has done it for you by then.

CHEERS GUYS,
Some published-Toyota specs sound good but i have no idea where i can pick up an 18R-GEU service manual from??!

Are these torque settings for the 18RG early motor, and would it be different for the later efi motor?

If you guys have exact specs and can be bothered posting them that would be exxcelent!!

Thanks for your help celicaboy.. We shoudl tabulate all info like this and make an archive i think....

Clancey and blackRA28 you both have a email of the scanned 18rg engine manual which you can post if you want.

I have just finished putting together an 18rgu and the tork settings we used for the head bolts were around the 63lb/ft mark.
The 18r-c ones are about 80 something from memory but that has the cast iron head not the alloy one.

I don't have our book handy at the moment but I wouldn't go over 63 until someone can give you a definite answer.

anything over 80 is way too high.
The tightest bolt on the 18rgu was the one holding on the harmonic balancer and that waas 83ish lb/foot.

if you torque the bolts at 70 foot pounds, it will be fine.

Those settings are fine for the 18R-c but are too heavy for the 18RG

63ft/lb is the tightening torque for the alloy headed 18RG.

Is this the final torque setting?? Or is this what you tension it to first..??

Can anyone give a definative answer on this? it seems 63. ft/lb is the go, but do you need to re-tension it to a tighter seting? or do it at a lighter setting first, then re-tension after 500k's upto 63 ft/lb??

Anyone have any specific information for the 18R-GEU ?

Guy

Final torque setting is 52.something - 63.1 ft/lb.

as for fist tension, probably around 35, then 45-50 (if you're going to finish at 63.1, less if you're going to finish at 52ish)

I would suggest going for the 63.1, as unless you've had your head surfaced and your block surfaced less might leave you with leaks.
