W58/W57 Size Differences and the Pooey A340E Wed, 12 January 2005 02:18 Go to next message
I am finally ditching the slush box A340E and I have a few questions for anyone that has done a conversion from an A340E to a W57/58.

I was under the impression that the exterior of the W57 and W58 were exactly the same size which would make it very difficult to tell which one is which. I am pretty sure that it is a W58 as it came out of a GA70 supra, unfortunately I dont have the build plate or the time to pull the gearbox apart to find out Sad

Anyway my question is: How much longer is the W5* as opposed to the A340E, I need to know this as the tailshaft needs to be modified to suit the correct lenght.

If someone could tell me the measurements that would be fantastic.

Cheers Smile

The tailshaft needs to be shortened and you need the yoke from a manual as well anyway.

Easiest thing to do is to install and then measure the distances and take them to the tailshaft mob. I used and recommend

Adelaide Tailshaft Service
U 11/ 17 -19 Churchill Rd North Dry Creek 5094 (08) 8262 9691

Make sure you replace the rear gearbox seal.

W57 to W58 is the gear ratios adn the sandwich plate. 99.99% of W58's have the steel sandwich plate, and the W57 has the alloy one, but my W58 from a MA70 with 7M-GE has an alloy plate.

If it is from the GA70, it may even be thw W55 ?

Cheers

My W58 is either 80mm or 100mm SHORTER than the old A43DE.

I'm not 100% sure, but I'd say the A43DE and the A340E are about the same length.

The tail shaft needed lengthening

Oops I forgot, my propshaft came out of a MA70, hence I needed it to be shorter. Either way, the end effect is the same. Provide the measurments and it will be sweet !!

So the W57 and W58 are exactly the same size?

EDIT: also the rear gearbox seal, is that the seal where the engine and the gearbox meet? or is it the seal on the actual gearbox? if its the gearbox one, is it the seal in the middle of the box or where the yoke cover is?, if its the engine one how difficult are they to change becuase i think mine leaks anyway

Yes, same size

And the rear gearbox seal, surprise surprise, is at THE REAR OF THE GEARBOX.

Not the front, not halfway down, the rear.
Yes, at the yoke.
$5.

Change the rear main while you have the flywheel off too.
They cost about $30.
But don't put it in too far.
I learnt that the hardish way.

Besides, gbox front seal, gbox rear seal, engine rear main, thats about it.

Just make sure all seals are in straight.
I put the gbox front seal in slightly crooked, and it leaked fluid all over my clutch, forcing me to drop the gbox, and replace the seal, and clean the clutch.

Fit new fill and drain plugs, new flywheel bolts, new shifter bushings (2 off), reseal clutch slave and m/cyl.

That should about do it.

Michael: Flywheel bolts look nearly brand spankers, slave will be brand spankers also, however i think I might do the drain plugs and shifter bushings just to be safe Very Happy

Cheers for the help lads!
