Well here's my story of the troubles with my RA23 over the last 3 weeks.

(4th Oct) Driving along, I noticed the tempreature of my car was higher than normal so I stopped and there was no water in the radiator which was unexpected as I filled it less than a week earlier. I filled the radiator and went on my way. I noticed a bit of steam but didn't think anything of it as it was a cold night. Confused

(5th Oct) The next day I checked my radiator and it was empty again. I started the car and water started coming out the exhaust and checked under the oil cap and it was all milky. Great, the head gasket had died. Mad

(7th Oct) We pulled the engine apart on the Monday night and the gasket was intact so it looks like I'd cracked the head. We weren't too worried because I have a few spares. Crying or Very Sad

(12th Oct) The next weekend we cleaned the new head up and put new gaskets in and put the engine all back together. It ran but we didn't have time for it to warm up so we could adjust everything. Smile

(13th Oct. Bathurst!!!) I was watching Bathurst at a friends house and I get a call from my dad saying that the car ran beautifully until he heard a loud bang and the car stopped. He opened it all up and realised that he forgot to put the nuts onto the sprocket for the cam and it came flying off and put a huge hole in the front of the timing case. Luckily I had a spare of them as well. Mad Sad

(19th Oct) Not in a hurry to get the car running again because we're taking this opportunity to fix some rust, we left it until this weekend. Because we had to replace the timing case it broke the sump gasket so we had to drop the sump off to replace that. The car isn't designed to have the sump taken off unless the engine is out of the car. After getting the sump gasket in and the timing case back on and everything back together after a full day of work we started the car. It just ran like a dog. I took it for a drive up the road, the car wouldn't accelerate well and was shaking all over the place. We just parked it and left it for the night (Very pissed off at this stage) Mad Mad

(20th Oct) Sunday, we did a compression test on it and cylinder 1 wasn't working. Opened it all up and the valves are bent (I've just put the cover over it and leaving it for this coming weekend.

I've had some real bad luck with my car but this is the worst streak out of them all. I think my car is just a lemon, but I still love it. I'll let you know how the story ends, even if it is a trip to the wreckers.

sounds like my car.... here's my story.

about 4 months ago my car seamed to be going through the water. had to keep topping it up about 3 times a week. the previous few months i replaced the radiator, thermostat, had it compression tested and all was ok.

Until one night i was driving on the highway and then i heard a noise like driving over debry. i thought it was nothing so i kept driving. though i had better look down at the dash and i see my cars temperature is rising and my charge light is on.... oh no what happened.

The next day i see my water pump blew out.

2 months later i finally got a replacement engine as the previous one was DEAD to say the least.

Next came paint job. they first told me. bring it in on monday you'll have it by friday. friday came, you'll have it by wednesday at the latest. wednesday they told me friday i'll have it. i stressed i need the car for the weekend because i'll be without a car. friday came and they said, monday tuesday or wednesday.. finally got it on the wednesday 2 1/2 weeks after first putting it in.

Then, the day after i got the car back from the panel beaters the exhaust manifold gasket gets a hole in it. The stupid mechanic wasn't going to fix it under warrenty, but he soon changed his mind.. what an asshole.

So i'll have my car running 100% again this thursday..

Well she's running.... just. I sat down in her and had a talk to her (yes I know I'm odd) She wouldn't start last night after a lot of standing there scratching our heads we decided to changed the points and then she started. She idels wonderfully now and is a lot quieter but when we took her for a drive she jumps all over the place like she's mis firing. We think it's got something to do with the timing because we adjusted the distributor and sometimes she drove worse and other times she drove better. There was quite a few impressive back fires. Very Happy

Any suggestions would be great. Smile

Thanks for the support draven. I've been through so much with that car from 4 foot long flames out the exhaust, to a broken axle, clutch cylinders getting leaks to just not wanting to start (or stop). Most people would have given up on it by now and mum keeps telling me to take her to the wreckers but I couldn't do that.

SupraBoy, I'm going to be getting one of my car's painted hopefully within the next year. I'm going to prep it all myself and then get a friend to spray it for me for a bottle of beam. So hopefully that will eliminate being stuffed around.

Well she's on the road again, runs really well now, better than ever. I'm so happy that I can drive my car. All I have to do is fix the rust in the front of her and she'll be great!
